Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why do we still look forward to Nintendo's E3 directs?

Nintendo still doesn't realize E3 is one of the biggest gaming events in the world and they are not taking advantage of it by showing games that appeal to multiple types of gamers that are otherwise very difficult to reach via social media or the internet. No Nintendo, not every gamer in the world likes Smash. Not even all Nintendo fans.

They realised that that's why they focused hole E3 2016. to Zelda BotW that already become best selling Zelda game ever. What difrent with Nintendo compared to some others companies is that Nintendo is saving some announcements for Directs also and that they are focusing for releases in near future, almost all their E3 announcements are 2018. releases.

I think it was the 6-9 month rule that needs to be removed. I think at e3 it is okay for them to show games that will come out in the next 2 -3 years. Give us a short trailer and people would be hyped. Even the logo/title

No it dont need, not every person want to be showed game 2-3 years before launch and that game than be at several E3s before launch.

Nintendo seems to have a new angle for E3.
When Zelda Botw was all the rage a couple years ago, they thought they could focus on a major game for E3 and people would love it.
Zelda, Mario Odyssey and now Smash.

Also, Nintendo's strategy of scattering announcements throught the year is good when you have a lot to show. When you don't [have], that makes each announcement less impactful.

Reason why they decided hole E3 2016. only to Zelda BotW is because they didn't want to talk about Switch games yet that they were saving for January presentation, so E3 2016. was exaption and really can't be compared with any other E3.

But it's very obvious that Nintendo has staffs to show through the year:

-January: Kirby, Mario Aces, Dark Souls, DKTF, The World Ends with You: Final Remix, Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Celeste, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle DLC, SNK HEROINES Tag Team Frenzy, Labo...

-March: Smash Bros, Splatoon 2 Expansion, Okami HD, Sushi Striker, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, Undertale, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Little Nightmares, South Park...

-May: Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu, Pokemon Let's Go  Eevee, Pokemon Quest.

-June: Fortnite, Paladins, Daemon X Machina, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 DLC, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Overcooked 2, Killer Queen Black, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Starlink, Fifa 19..

Offcourse they could show more staffs at E3 if they wanted, but they didnt want that, and we can expect at least 2-3 more Directs in rest of year where we will have more 2018. announcements.

It was the only conference that I didn't watch and based on most feedback, I am glad I didn't watch it.

People are making it out to be worse than it really was, in terms of content it was about the same as last year except for an extra 20 minutes of Smash info which could have been saved for the Treehouse or a Smash specific Direct.

If they would have just done a 3-5 mimute trailer for Smash than it would have been pretty similar to last year.

Yeah, biggest problem with E3 Direct was too long Smash Bros segment (Bros Smash took 24 min from 42 min Direct), so basicly people forget all other things showed before Smash Bros segment and they were bored, so if Smash Bros Ultimate had only around 5 min segment, reactions would be far more positive then they were, while this looked more like Smash Bros Direct than E3 Direct.

Oh they wish we would've forgotten, perhaps that's why they made the Smash segment so long lel. But um yeah, obviously if they made the direct not meh, it wouldn't have been meh. Tis a moot point that doesn't change anything so I'm not sure why yal keep repeating it.

I dont. Nintendo thinks that E3 is the Place to announce games comming in the next few weeks. Well, thats not what e3 is all about. E3 is about the future. And as earlier you are showing the games as lower is the chance the game will get leaked and the hype lvl will stay high. Somebody should have asked Reggie if he thinks that FF7 will sell under 1m because Sony and Square are "teasing" the fans since 4 years. That game will sell like hotcakes. Like GoW did.

I disagree, E3 Direct was solid until Smash Bros segment, and very long Smash Bros segment effect very negatively on hole E3 Direct, just 5 min long Smash Bros segment definitely would make Direct mush less negative, also point that some things like Fortnite were already leaked didn't help at all.

Ill still be hyped for it. Disappointment is a part of the E3 experience as well.

That's a funny way to look at it, but I agree. Salty tears this year for no Metroid prime footage and, especially, no rumored "F-Zero"  :'(

No thank you. Nintendo has changed the mid-2000s culture that involved announcing a new game years in advance and other companies are just now following suit.

Their biggest problem this year was just a lack of announcements, even though we know they have more to announce. We got one new first-party announcement, three third-parties and two new indie titles. They could have at least given their upcoming 3DS titles some time but instead it seems like they’re going to wait to do another Direct again. It should come pretty soon since the last major 3DS release is slated for August 3rd.

But then what happened with Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei V, and Metroid Prime 4? Nintendo tries to not announce new games too early, but they still do every year lol.

Oh and just a sidenote:The other reason that Nintendo presentation this year wasnt all that big its because more than half of it was leaked to hell and back. While it still wouldnt be as good as last year, a surprise announcement of Fortnite and its shadow drop, along with DB Fighters Z, Overcooked 2, the smaller indie stuff could have easily made people less salty about the presentation.Wouldnt make it better than last year, but it would make it better.Just saying.
Hardly, atleast that wouldn't have made a difference to me. Fire Emblem n Yoshi still delayed with Yoshi not even shown, Smash would still get an underwhelming and overly long reveal, more time would still be lost showing off $50 dlc for Let's Go, and Mario Party would remain as the only new announcement from Nintendo while Animal Crossing is vaporware for all we know.

I said it would make the presentation better, not the best.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Because E3 2016 and 2017 were great?
I mean, 2018 wasn't horrible. It was just too much Smash.
We got Super Mario Party and a great looking Fire Emblem trailer.
Also Fortnite!

Good question. E3 is irrelevant to them and is loosing steam, people should stop expecting Nintendo to go all out because they don't need to and I doubt they ever will. We should still look forward to it, just don't expect massive amounts of reveals that will blow your balls off.

It feels like Nintendo fans are the most hype fanbase and despite being let down on multiple occasions, still hype up Nintendo events to no end and blame Nintendo when they underperform even though we've been conditioned to expect it at this point. It's like getting overwhelmingly hyped for them is in our nature.

Well whatever, I look forward to Nintendo's next E3, I bet it's gonna be insane!
