Screw metascores, that's a nice list of quality games excluding Contrast and Kinect Sports. And Rare is done with Kinect games anyway. Even low scoring games like SoD2 and SoT have been succesful. And you simply assume it's Remedy that chose to go multiplat while it's more likely MS just won't fund another game for them atm.

Metacritic is an aggregator, showing us the general consensus among critics. The quality of each individual game is subjective. What I'm arguing is the general consensus. :)

I'm not assuming anything, whether or not they decided to go multiplatform is irrelevant, the fact is that Microsoft won't be getting an exclusive game from them.

Are you saying Remedy won't make another exclusive game for MS? If so than do you have a link or source for your claim? If not than that is an assumption.

We all knew Remedys next game was going to be a multiplat, its nothing new from them, have you heard of Max Payne?

Also i am hearing rumours of a Alan Wake 2..

Of course not, but I can see why you might have thought that. It has been some time since I last wrote in English. :)

What I'm trying to say is, that Microsoft is in dire need of exclusive titles that can showcase the hardware, especially Xbox One X, and as of right now, they won't be getting one from Remedy.

They already have titles showcasing X1X hardware. Ryse, Quantum Break, Forza Motorsport 7, Halo 5 and just about all 3rd games running at a native 4k.

Sure Remedy's next game wont be until next gen however i see the X has already made its mark and its not only the most powerful console on the market, its also the smallest Xbox ever made. Its a pretty convenient peice of hardware and a good pedestal for the brand to stand on.

MS has done just fine with the quality of their first-party offerings this generation. The difference is that Sony has knocked it out of the park. So, people now have unrealistically high expectations. It is not usual, even for the top dog in this category - Nintendo, to have every big title they release for a 2 year period end up with amazingly high meta scores. Halo at 84 and Gears at 84, Horizons in the upper 80's, Motorsports averaging mid-80's. Those are very good scores, and, to the extent I've played them, very good games.

I'm not going to do the research to get exact numbers. But, my guess is that MS' first-party, AAA offerings, this generation, when averaged, are within the normal range of review scores.

Also, I'd like to know what the average for PS is, if you take all of their first-party, rather than just GoW, H:ZD, and a couple other heavy hitters. It isn't like every one of their games gets a 90+ score.

Well, that's subjective. I don't think the titles you have listed showcase the Xbox One X. Heck, I would have said the same thing about the Playstation 4 Pro, had I not played God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn on the system. Both games are excellent at showcasing the Playstation 4 Pro, and more importantly they justify its existence. But I totally respect your opinion.

That is if we assume Remedy will make an exclusive for Microsoft's next generation hardware. The fact of the matter is that neither of us know - how about we just leave it at that?

Of course it is, but can you wholeheartedly say that Xbox One X comes across as the most powerful console on the market, when comparing the visual fidelity of its games to titles like God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn on the Playstation 4 Pro? Sure power is nice, but what difference does it make when it isn't utilised?

Keep in mind games like God of War and Horizon look good on base hardware, the Pro basically boosts its pixels from 1080p to 1440p.

Only way to bench mark these mid gen consoles is to make games built from the ground up exclusive only to there hardware.

The X is doing what its power was suppose to do and thats 4k. Sure it would be nice if MS made graphical movie style games like Sony however there more focused on creating old school experiences rather than the modern movie game hybrids.

I would also add that still to this day that Ryse is an incredibly beautiful game and for a launch title that required 10% GPU power dedicated for Kinect, it still stands tall many years later especially running in native 4k.

We should wait for them to make new games before we can say if it works out or not. Also you're missing some studios.

Are you talking about the acquired studios? If so, Playground Games will continue to work on Forza Horizon and Undead Labs, State of Decay - already existing Microsoft franchises. Compulsion Games' isn't exactly a studio we should expect great things from, looking at their track record. Ninja Theory is the only studio I see doing something decend.

Which studios am I missing - Mojang? They didn't reldease anything on current-gen. :)

Playground is working on a new open world game that isn't Forza. Phil confirmed that at E3. You have a point about compulsion but someone mentioned in this threat that studios like Naughty Dog and Guerilla Games weren't too hot until they were acquired.

Mojang said they're working on a new Ip a few months ago.

Now that you put it this way. The only worthwhile addition to Microsoft is Ninja Theory. I am sure they will pump out a very good AAA in 3 years from the past work of Hellblade, DMC, Enslaved and Heavenly Sword.

Microsoft has always been Halo, Gears, Fable; repeat and repeat.

Sony has so many existing and new IPs. This is what distinguishes Sony from the other 2.

Forza is amazing, but it doesn't make any impact as its addressable market is very small, it only sells like a million copy each game. Gran Turismo is still living in its glory days and haven't released any meaningful game for a long time, even though it still sells like 5+million copies per game.

During Microsoft's E3 2018 press briefing Phil Spencer announced the acquisition of Ninja Theory, Playground Games, Undead Labs and Compulsion Games, as well as the formation of 'The Initiative', a new Santa Monica based studio. Spencer promised a better future for the Xbox community in terms of AAA exclusive blockbuster titles, but the way I see it, their problems are far from solved by these acqusitions.

Sure these acqusitions is a step in the right direction, but Microsoft's problem isn't just the low output of AAA exclusive titles, but the quality of the games itself. Their tentpole franchises; Halo, Gears of War and Forza Motorsport are far from their peak, and while Forza Horizon, the best current Xbox franchise, is knocking it out of the park, I fear fans of the franchise might get fatigued in the future, as Playground Games keep re-using the same formula, but location - look what happened to Halo and Gears of War.

Metacritic scores of current generation output from Microsoft Studios, excl. remasters and definitive editions.

  • 343 Industries (average score of 84)
    • Halo 5: Guardians (84 score on Xbox One)
  • The Coalition (avergage score of 85)
    • Gears of War 4 (84 score on Xbox One and 86 on PC)
  • Turn 10 Studios (average score of 83)
    • Forza Motorsport 5 (79 score on Xbox One)
    • Forza Motorsport 6 (87 score on Xbox One)
    • Forza Motorsport 7 (86 score on Xbox One and 82 on PC)
  • Playground Games (average score of 88)
    • Forza Horizon 2 (86 score on Xbox One)
    • Forza Horizon 3 (91 score on Xbox One and 86 on PC)
  • Rare (average score of 67)
    • Killer Instinct (73 score on Xbox One)
    • Kinect Sports Rivals (60 score on Xbox One)
    • Sea of Thieves (69 score on Xbox One and 67 on PC)
  • Undead Labs (average score of 68)
    • State of Decay 2 (67 score on Xbox One and 69 on PC)
  • Compulsion Games (average score of 62)
    • Contrast (59 score on PS4, 62 on PC and 65 on Xbox 360)
  • Ninja Theory (average score of 84)
    • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (88 score on Xbox One, 81 on PS4 and 83 on PC)

I know Metacritic scores isn't the end-all be-all, but it paints a good, and more importantly, true picture of one of Microsoft's biggest shortcomings this generation, quality. Not only has Microsoft Studios's output been terrible, but the quality has taken a massive dive from the Xbox 360 era. Remember when the world was sat on fire upon the release of a new Halo and Gear of War game? That hasn't happened in a long time.

It is also worth noting, that Playground Games and Undead Labs were already making Microsoft exclusive titles, Forza Horizon and State of Decay respectively, so them being acquired by Microsoft won't amount to more exclusives on their platforms. With that being said, I'm super excited to see what Ninja Theory does next. I genuinely applaud Microsoft for acquiring such a talented and unique studio.

Something else I also want to touch on, is Microsoft's  second party situation - Remedy, a studio that has long been associated with the Xbox brand, has chosen to go multiplatform. And Insomniac, that started this generation by allying themselves with Microsoft for Sunset Overdrive, has since released Ratchet and Clank on Playstation 4 and are now working on one of Sony's upcoming tentpole franchises, Spider-Man.

I think people overhype exclusives in terms of selling hardware, before GOW was huge hit, what sony exlusive has sold over 10 million, other then uncharted 4. sony brand is just much stronger WW, and they nailed with the hardware, compared to Microsoft,  as well as advertisement.
