They could have gone with Xavier, Nvidia's third chip, though that would have meant a 2019 release for the Switch. I think they might go with it with the next Nintendo console. If They go with a slightly more refined Switch, then chances are that it'll either go with a modified Tegra X2 or another modified X1.

SO far though, Xavier is Nvidia's latest, being used with some cars (a modified version).

I think at this point, it just comes down to being satisfied with Nintendo platforms for Nintendo games. It just looks like they are constantly going to be too far behind the curve to deliver, at least the expereince I am looking for from 3rd party games.

By the time they do a revision, it is going to have to play PS5/XB4 ports, and honestly I think Sony and Microsoft are in a better position to deliver portables based on Ryzen Mobile and Navi/Next Gen, than Nintendo will be able to do with Nvidia. Like you said, Xavier is aimed at the Auto industry, and it is a massive chip. No doubt they can make a modified version for the chip with advancements they have learned from Xavier proper, but it is a lot less clear path to next gen portables than AMD's.

At any rate, Fortnite is just another example of why I will be staying away from 3rd parties on Switch and sticking to Remote Play on Vita.

They more or less gave up on the power race after the Gamecube era. I also believe that they care more about making bank on the system, than simply losing out on profits within the first 2-3 years. They likely saw what happened to Sony last gen and decided they never want to go anywhere near that route.

These days they more or less play it safe, which is why we see their own 1st party titles looking decent for the systems power they roll with, while 3rd party titles end up having to tone the visuals/performance down, in order to fit on the system itself. I recently tried FN on Switch and it honestly looked so toned back, so blurry and clunky with it's frame rate. I eventually bought into Splatoon 2 (Thanks to the sale they had) and that game runs far better and looks decent due to the chosen art style (and map size).

Nintendo probably know that by the time PS5/X2 launch, that they will have to go for something like Xavier or a new console altogether, because by then we'll have devs doing what they do each time Nintendo systems show their age, coming up with logical reasons as to why higher demanding games cannot be ported over.

I don't think at this time, that MS should bother with mobiles or handhelds, simply because their main focus the past few gens was the Xbox, and now they are trying (very little) to claw their way back into PC gaming. They need to put more focus on both of those, if they want to couple them together to making their "xbox family" more ideal. The last thing we need is MS making a handheld, and ignoring one of the 3 eco-systems while also pulling a Vita on one of them.

The only games I play with the Switch are Ninty first party, or 3rd party indie titles that actually eprform well on the Switch, but also aren't too complex in terms of visuals (like say DOOM). I bought Rayman definitive edition on Switch and because that game runs so well and it's 2D art style is timeless, It's had me hooked on it for days, while a game like FN has had me ignoring that title altogether.

First Fortnite was 30 FPS on PS4 also, and later through updates that improved frame rate and visuals, so saying that Switch can hold solid 30 fps is same like you said that PS4 could not handled 60fps when game was runing at 30 FPS on PS4.

I am not saying that Switch version will also will be 60 fps later with updates, but we can definitely expect improvements in frame rate, resolution and visuals through updates, same like they did with PS4/XB1.

Talking about frame rate for Switch 3rd party games, depending from game, Fifa, Rocket League, Dragon Ball Fighter Z...are all 60 FPS games.

I could see a solid 30fps, but no way they will get it to 60fps.

We will see, I expecting at least improved frame rate, better resolution and better visuals with less pop-up, all that was improved on PS4/XB1 after inital launch.

Ryzen and Navi are not mobile chips, and you can't fit them easily in mobile device and in same time to have normal batter life and heating, like DF talked in their video, while Nvidia has great mobile technology and while Xavier is aimed on first place for auto industry could easily be used for Switch 2 (Xavier would gave them similar performance to XB1 S), offcourse it would be smaller and less power hungry than mobile Ryzen and Navi in any case. I mean even X2 Tegra would give at least 50% boost in capabilities for Switch.

Dont forget, Nvidia said that their partnership for Switch will last 20 years, so they definitely have on mind Nintendo hardware with their chips and they are preparing chips for Switch revisions and Switch 2.

At best they improve the frame rate imo.

Edit: Actually, watch the video. That's a good example of what I am talking about.

I think people have some sort of nostalgia goggles about how good last gen graphics were. Last gen games often looked flat, bland, pixelated or muddy by today's standards. Especially in an open world game.

Fortnite actually runs well on modest specs, maybe you're confused with PUBG.

The Switch is acceptable for the specs, especially if you actually plan on playing portably. But I would rather play at ~60 fps on other platforms.

I don't remember Halo 4 looking nearly as bad as you just described.

You cherry picked one of the most impressive games of the 7th gen. But even then, it had lots of dithering, muddy textures, and pixelated due to 720p with no significant anti aliasing.

But even then the X1 port looks significantly better by simply improving the resolution and other visual tweaks without touching the assets. If Halo 4 had better textures it would be passable as an 8th gen game, especially for 1080p/60 fps.

You aren't considering the Switch port is already benefitting from great optimization of Fortnite. Which is why is works so well on Switch to begin with.

Its like Doom on Switch, it was already a well optimized game and that helped when bringing it to Switch.

At best, I anticipate a more stable frame rate and MAYBE minor visuals improvements. But there is only so much they can do with the specs on Switch, its already one of the more impressive games on the platform.

Optimisation means you optimising game for hardware, tools, APIs...on platform that game is/will be released. You don't know if Fortnite is already great optimised for Switch, and with point it wasn't great optimised on any hardware on which was launch at start, is telling us that Switch version will also have further optimisation through the patches.

Doom and Fortnite are totally different things, Doom is finished and done game but even Doom had optimisation patch months after Switch relase. Also intresting you didn't mention Rocket League for instance (instead of Doom) that recive couple of improved and optimisation patches that brought us more stabile frame rate, better resolution and better visuals, Fortnite is much similar to Rocket League, game will be keep being supported with new content, patches and optimisation, especially for platform thats just launched on. Also talking about Doom, Doom is 1st year Switch game and 1st Panic Button Switch game, for instance it seems that Wolfenstein 2 will be better optimised than Doom was on Switch.

Point that curently Fortnite for Switch is OK port doesnt mean it want have futher improvements like we alredy saw with other platforms and games like Rocket League, actually all point that we will definitely have some optimization through patches later. Like I wrote, I expecting like improved frame rate, better resolution and better visuals with less pop-up.

I'm saying Fortnite is well optimized as a port for Switch. The biggest improvements the game needs appears to be a more stable 30 fps. You say its an OK port, but its one of the most impressive on the platform.

Rocket League and Doom did seem some improvements from patches, but lets not exaggerate their significance. I recall Rocket League improving but that game is less GPU intensive than Doom or Fortnite. I believe DF looked at some of the patch work for Doom and saw little improvement. As far Wolfenstein 2, it will likely be better optimized but lets wait for the final product.

I saying there definatly some room for furhher improvements and if we look how Fortnite is managing on other platforms, we can expect something similar on Switch also, game is just launched on Switch offcourse there will further optimisation.

Yeah Doom had some minor improvements but Rocket League is totaly difrent story, it recived couple of improved and optimisation patches that brought us more stabile frame rate, better resolution and better visuals, because its online game that will keep playing and getting new content and patches and we can expect same for Fortnite.

gonna have to agree here, Rocket league at launch had a very very harsh resolution scaler in place to lock at 60fps seen that drop down to near SNESesque levels of muddy graphics while playing it both in handheld and docked, now the game while docked is rather similar in looks to the PS4 counterpart and you would need to watch for a bit to see which version you are looking at , before it was night and day.

They've even added a 60fps/performance and 30fps/Quality option for those who want it shiny and care less about the 60fps lock. I don't use the option myself but it's nice to have it there if people rather looks than performance.
