Forums - Sony Discussion - PSNow getting download feature? (Rumour)

That's just a promotion though and I'm not certain the service will actually get games I want to play.

I pay for Xbox Gamepass because its $10 a month and I get access to new games (Forza Horizon 4 in a few months). But month to month PS Now is $20 and just older stuff.

PS Now is not competitive, just a streaming option.

Well... I just paid for a year and its about 6 bucks a month. Having a blast right now. no need to download, pretty cool, and I get to play all the ratchet and clank games I did not :D and all the other games.
Of course its competitive it just depends what you want to play.

I could say the gamepass is not competitive because it does not have any PS exclusives. Your definition of competitive is just YOUR definition.

What is PS Now competing with exactly? Its more like an option.

If want to compare PS Now and Game Pass. They aren't really competing because their focus is different. Sony's service primarily thrives on old content and lack of BC, its the only way to play PS3 games on a PS4. MS's service also relies on 7th gen content as well, but does a much better job at offering 8th gen content. Most importantly, Game Pass is appealing to new subscribers by offering 1st party games at launch.

I don't really see them as competitors because Sony isn't really trying to make the service successful. Its just an option for playing some old games, that's fine but its regular price is too expensive.

Agreed completely on the taste being subjective, that was exactly my original point.

But you can't say in the immediate following sentence that X games coming to Xbox will appeal to more people than a collection of PS3 + some PS4 games. If Xbox first party was really that appealing we wouldn't have the user base split we currently have.

Appeal to popularity is something that really doesn't stick when arguing for Xbox, at least not this generation.

I'll finish as I started though, different people will find each offer more or less worth the price and that's absolutely ok. Would be a boring world if we all liked the same thing :)

Okay... let me explain what you got wrong.

PS4's success is not actually due to its exclusives. It was crushing X1 even when PS4 had mediocre exclusives. Sony launched a better designed console at a lower price, that's objective and helped PS4 excel at launch.

PS Now WILL NEVER BE SUCCESSFUL if all it offers is old games at a regularly high subscription price.

A game like Forza Horizon 4 has the potential to sell several million on its own. But that game is going to be on Game Pass at launch, that will appeal to more people than a collection of old games alone.

Hence, if PS Now offered some 1st party games at launch the service would achieve great popularity. So if you don't get my argument its as simple as this, NEW GAMES GET MORE SUBSCRIBERS.

Look at Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime for example. They grew in success by launching new/original content on their services. That's essentially what Game Pass is doing and why its more relevant than PS Now.

I don't get how 1 game (forza in your example) is somehow "objectively" more appealing than hundreds of "old" games.

In my personal opinion the only thing hindering a more successful psnow is the lack of download option.

I'm not saying it would be more appealing to you or any particular individual, only from my perspective as someone who actually had the service for a couple of years.

100$ a year is an amazing value for the amount of games available and especially with them increasing every month.

Also, i'm sure they will keep tweeking the service itself as is evidenced by ubisoft and ea's comments during the last e3 and their outlook on game streaming services. Even MS made comments in that regard, so if anything you my expect gamepass to end up looking a lot more like psnow in the future.

Anyway, i got your main point, i suppose you got my main point too. We can agree to disagree

Old games + New AAA is more appealing than just old games. Also, PS Now is pushing too much PS3 content. Given the usual price they should offer more PS4 content.

$100 is not a bad value, I'm arguing that's not the usual price. Also, month to month is too expensive (more like $240 for a year).

Game streaming is a great concept and I'm a fan of it theoretically. But PS Now is a service for playing old games and very little of it is PS4 content. The future is streaming new games, not last gen.

I can't imagine you disagree with anything I'm saying. I think you have the impression I'm attacking Sony.

of course 240$ a year is too much, hence why for 2 years I used the service I paid 100$ per year. not sure why you think that's not an usual price... but anyway, see for yourself:

https://www.playstation.com/en-us/explore/playstationnow/

scroll down to the bottom of the page until you find:

12 Month Subscription 99$ (not even 100 but 99 lol)

So as you just stated, 100 a year is not a bad price. And I think you'll agree it becomes an even better value if they indeed will allow the download feature which was my entire point from the start.

Looking to the future I'm sure Sony will adjust the offer. Besides keeping the older games library, start delivering newer games to the streaming service. This seems much more likely since EA, Ubisoft and even MS started talking about streaming as a market they are now aiming to. What the service will look like by the time the competitors hit the market I don't know, but I'm quite confident more competition means they will present a more competitive offer than what they currently do.

I don't think you were attacking Sony as much as it seemed like you were defending MS and their specific offer, which is perfectly fine if it suits your preferences more. The only reason why I see more value on the PS Now is because I have no interest in MS first party games. It's all about individual tastes :)

Again... $100 or even $99 is not the usual annual price. THIS IS A SPECIAL DEAL PRICE. I just bought a year of Game Pass for $60 on Amazon. That doesn't mean I can always get it that cheap.

The downloading feature will be a great addition, but the problem is a lack of content compatible with the PS4. Most of the content on PS Now simply won't play on a PS4.

Forget about personal taste. PS Now needs more PS4 games and new games to really get attention. That's objective, its not gonna become popular relying on PS3 and some older PS4 games.

Imo ps now is in an incubator. Sony will launch it pretty much world wide with the ps5 launch and it'll probably download all games and play them even ps3 and include a big slice of the ps4 library.
