I think they could have handled the character much better, she get's better towards the end, but her showing no fear, hardly being serious in serious situations, and over use of the F word were kinda annoying.

Ellie's only really afraid of being alone. Death is nothing to her. It's just 'waiting for my turn.'

Did you even follow the character development? :)

Yea i know that just doesn't seem believable, a 14 year old girl has 0 fear of death but of being alone. would have been nice to see her start out normal, and grow stronger, instead of 0 fear BS.

I really fail to see where you get the 0 fear from.

Does she have to say "I dont have 0 fear" for you to understand that she is in fear?

Have you played The Last of Us: Left Behind?   If so, you should understand why she is "Not afraid" of dying and why she is just "waiting her turn".

Ellie is fatalistic and fears being alone. She's also immune to the infection. She's lost three people she loves (or liked) and this cements her fatalism as the game progresses, giving her more strength and less fear. Only when Joel gets close to her does she change and feel some hope. The 'OK' is a compromise because she knows he's lying but at least isn't going to be alone (the thing she fears the most).

It's an emotional trade off and one she's going to grow to resent. Watch her facial expressions in the recent gameplay demo when the guy is talking about Joel. The dropping of the head, the less than emphatic nod (sardonic rather than emphatic), the pursing of the lips and pushing out of the bottom jaw.

people in this thread have confirmed that she's not scared of dying.

well, there you go. Maybe you have to play the game one more time to see what it is about.

That makes me happy. To me, the absolute best game to ever be on a Playstation console. One of the best told stories and characters. You care about them.. I dont think I've ever cared as much about game characters as I do with Joel and Ellie.. as far as gameplay goes I dont think it's one of the best but certainly good enough.

At first I wasnt to sold about it.. after the first third or so.. I put it aside for a few months before I went back.. and the second half of it blew my mind. Shed a tear or three along the way. Prologue killed me.

It makes me smile to see some of you "getting it". When it comes to story, sometimes, it's not always about a surface meaning. They want you to dig deeper, and because of our technology, we can convey emotion in a way that is quite convincing. Everything that Ellie does has logic to it. No point in comparing her to an average 14-year-old girl. She was never marketed that way and the game made it clear that she was different.

lol i'm not comparing her to a average 14 year old. she just has 0 fear and hardly even serious when shit going down. example when the dude wants to make her a pet, she could have acted like she was down and waited for the right opportunity to strike, instead she a total bad ass and doesn't give a shit about being cut into a million pieces she even encourages it.

Please stop using the words 'bad ass', it reduces Ellie, one of the most rounded characters in any video game, to a b movie clique. In that situation, what else would she do? Think about this carefully before just conjuring a scene in your mind that fits the scenario for THIS particular character. Would she lose it? Would she be cowering in the corner? There isn't many options other than to be who Ellie has been throughout the whole game. Bravado fits her personality, especially when there has no other option. Context changes everything. Ellie finally showed her vulnerability when her antagonist was dead and no longer a threat. She falls apart in Joel's arms because the space to do so opens up. That letting go leaves her numb for quite some time, leading to a scene that seems to have baffled many people for some reason. Just after being attacked and in her mind about to be 'raped', having finally let the act drop and fallen into the arms of her Father, we move into the scene at the bus station and people ask: 'Why is Ellie looking unhappy?' No, seriously, I saw so many Let's Plays of people not connecting the two scenes properly and being confused.

Oh my god ...

I feel like "0 fear" is going to become the next home-made VGChartz meme ...

I mean seriously? Ellie has "0 fear"? I haven't played The Last of Us in a while, but I seem to remember her expressing a decent amount of fear. A lot of the time it was during scenes where here adrenaline was up, so maybe it got drowned out in anger or self-defense. But I just have no idea what this thread has even devolved into. I mean there's an entire backstory to Ellie already, she literally has her arm bitten and can't get infected, I think there's a valid reason for her to be a bit less fearful than an "average 14 year old girl", whatever that means.
