I can't remember which size it is but they are security torx.  Without removing the heatsink about all I think you can get to is the power supply, the hard drive and the disc drive.  I was lucky enough to get to take mine apart when I bought the GF a physical copy of GOW only to find out her 2 year old had fed the drive a little plastic star that prevented discs from being read.

That last line made me actually cringe reading it.

I would really not recommend the OP attempt to repair this on his own having seen the videos on youtube of it being done, it's something I wouldn't be confident with... and just this week I replaced the analogue stick in my Switch controller and the battery pack from an old DS3 that was knocking about and wouldn't charge.

That said.... no more Ghosting to the left in all my switch games for the sake of a €3.40 replacement stick and about 45 mins of squinting to see the tiny damn board connections in the joycon...

unrelated I know... but seriously think about how tiny the joycon is and those ribbons are crazily light, would really recommend caution if anyones planning to replace one of these sometime! Cool to see inside though, just needed a small philips and the Nintendo tri wing screwdriver to save 50e replacing it.

Very tidy little kit.. and wow at that price, it's always nuts when people ask me to lend them a screwdriver when I think a set like that should be in every house just on the off chance you need it, people probably spend more on a couple of coffees in Costa than a set like that.

Personally, I would just buy a new PS4. $99 is half the price of a PS4 during a sale.

Consoles break, I kinda expect it.

Pretty much any electronic device has a limited warranty.
Chance of wear and tear caused by irresponsible use increases over time, so if all companies gave out unlimited warranties, they'd lose a lot of money, and often not fairly.

Like the situation you described with running the console with little space for ventilation. Add in hot temperatures in the room, and leaving the console on for excessive amounts of time... The more months that pass, the higher the chance that something inside will break because you were irresponsible. Why should they fix that?

Luckily my iPhone recently died randomly within my 1 year warranty. Got a brand new one sent back to me within 2 days.

Also on a personal note, I never had any issues with my PS3 or PS4.
PS2 however got the infamous Disc Read Error after 4-5 years. Bought myself a PS2 Slim then.

Not talking about my system here, but IMO consoles should be under warranty for at least 2 years, or a protection plan should be offered at a reasonable rate. But Sony no longer offers protection plans in NA.

Well that's a lot more reasonable, and I agree. One year seems too short.

By the way when I read $99 I was thinking $9 and thought that's not a big deal. lol
Yeah, I'd rather buy a new PS4 than fix it for that price. Maybe try fixing it yourself with a youtube tutorial.

I forked over the money for their repair. Now let's see if I get my system back with the 1TB HDD that I put in it. Heck, let's see if they fix it at all. 

Edit: Also, having just looked up PS4 failure rates being at just under 1%, I'm a little more confident in their hardware.

It sucks, but if the warrenty is up, you have to pay. That’s how it is for any electronic. We don’t know for sure that it isn’t a problem with your living arrangement or anything else that could have caused the issue or failure. Of course, at $99 we’re fast approaching the “might as well get a new one” territory.

Here in Romania I can get extended warranty from the vendor for most electronics. It costs what it costs, but it's covered.

I think it's unreasonable to expect any company to fix your purchase for free at your whim. No product is designed to work forever, and no product can be designed to work for all time. Even the best industrial companies only offer 1-2 years warranty for their products. A Universal Robot only has 1 year of warranty, and that one needs to actually work constantly. And you will be billed, if fixing under warranty, for any scratch that they may find on their unit. If they see so much as a dent, the warranty goes off and you need to pay expensive repairs.

So...why precisely should a product designed for home use have a longer warranty when it's handed over to the general public?

Maybe most PS4's keep working well into their teens like the PS2 did. But having this experience makes me want to not even bother with a PS5. 

My 360 broke twice under varranty and is in good shape till this day.

PS4 failure rate is abysmal, maybe they find ur avatar insulting...
