Eric, are you prepared to debunk the following screenshot?

I ask because this is what was provided by "authorities" in media. Variety, for example: https://variety.com/2018/gaming/news/fortnite-switch-ps4-accounts-1202843175/

All I'm asking is for you to shorten up your posts. It's what I try to do: keep things brief and to the point and not try to use overly-complicated metaphors.

Sony putting out "a typical corporate BS response" does nothing more than make Sony look bad. It also not only fuels the efforts of the "cross play pushers" but also sours more moderate spectators.

Sony's not very smart if your description of them is to be believed. I think they should have gone with the "writing a few paragraphs" approach and at least maybe win over moderate people who will have made the effort to read Sony's response in full.

The issue is damaging to their image.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vqhSAyAcjo

Sony's not "4theplayer" nor is PS always "the best place to play" as their marketing regularly points out.

It also leaves them open for Nintendo and Microsoft to attack. I hope Nintendo and Microsoft do so at some point.

Well it seemed like you were trying to see my points, but weren't quite there, so I felt the need to elaborate. Apparently I was mistaken I guess.

'The Fortnite account is associated with a platform we knowingly gave into even though we knew what the better decision would have been for the gamers but instead we caved. We can't do anything about it because we already signed a contract. We shouldn't have done that but it's too late now. Please don't hate us and open a new account and continue to play our game while purchasing more micro-transactions'.   Unless Nin is the one blocking PS accounts from being on Switch, which is more unlikely, that's my take on it.

Were you there when Epic Games and Sony were negotiating Fortnite's PS4 port? Have you access to the contracts themselves?

EricHiggin said:

PS gave a horrible PR response and still won me over so. I have no issue pointing out problems when any brand crosses the line, and while PS is getting closer, they haven't quite got there yet.

Sounds like you at least acknowledge PS has slowly been adopting increasingly anti-consumer policy.

This still does not eliminate the possibility that the agreement between EG and Sony on how Fortnite would be handled on PS4 had been concluded long before a Switch port even started consideration... By the time Switch port started work, dealings with Sony may have already concluded. Too late then, Switch access to a PS4-associated EG account was not discussed at the first round of dealings.

I sincerely think EG wants cross-platform and cross-access so that their players can move freely across platforms. It only makes sense to have this to maximize playtime and therefore, transactions. To lock players down to a platform and place limits, on the other hand, benefits a platform since players are now forced to use that platform.

EG has some blame sure but it doesn't make sense to me that they would ever want this situation to occur. I cannot say the same for Sony that has the greatest clout out of the big three.

Even if we assume there we no further dealings, its pretty obvious that whatever deal they made was for competition console devices, and not specifically just the X1.

We don't know that. Without being able to look at business exchanges themselves, we cannot say that the X1 wasn't singled out.

twintail said:

Either way, Sony not having cross-play with either X1 or Switch before Fortnite was released, and then not allowing content transfer with X1, only makes the issue with Switch even more obvious. Like, its possible they didnt know but in no way is it probable.

And I by no means argue that EG dont want a more open environment. But they accepted the terms given to them from Sony. because money was a lot more important to them than being pro-consumer. Agreeing and signing that agreement is more than just some blame. They had a role to play in all of this.

Yes EG played their role and NOW they're trying to rectify things and open things up for everyone and allow maximum accessibility with no restrictions. Donald Mustard from Epic wants it but the entity standing in the way is Sony.

It all comes down to Sony in the end.

No, but were you? When you eat at a restaurant and the food tastes off or weird, do you just keep eating or send it back? Epic's message sounds off, so since I can't 'send it back' and they clearly don't want to say much more either, the best I can do is guess at what's going on behind closed doors. Since MS and Nin have basically said they have nothing to do with it, that really narrows down the possibilities. I'm not going to be ok with 'the chefs busy so just keep eating'. It seems like you are though. I hope the food isn't tainted for your sake.

What do you expect Epic to say? If I'm close, they obviously wouldn't write that or anything close to it because it would make them look 'as bad as PS does' right now, if not worse. If that PR is super bad for PS, imagine how bad it would be for Epic. PS also wouldn't exactly want to point the finger at Epic because Fortnite is raking in money for PS4, and making Epic look bad could hurt sales more on PS4, but may also hurt the relationship Epic and PS have going into the future. In a way it's smart for PS to take the heat because right now they are in a position where they can handle it.

Yes, I thought I had made it clear before that PS seems to be heading slowly in that direction in reaction to moves made by rivals. You however seemed to take that as weakness and doubled down on your viewpoint, instead of moving ever so slightly and admitting that PS may not be as horrible as you seem to make them out to be, and maybe their business tactics could very well have some legitimate reasoning. That's the kind of thing PS would want to hear and would make them want to sit down and seriously talk about how everyone could work together to try and solve the issue(s) certain gamers, devs, and pubs have with cross accounts and cross play. If all they do instead is yell and scream wants, without strong informative backing, making PS miserable, then they might just troll these people with Fortnite bundles to make them miserable as well. I suggest the easy way, but that's just me.

I'm going to save you the trouble of endless speculation: Sony is the party most responsible for current restrictions on Fortnite.

Like I told twintail, even if EG has a great deal of blame for this mess, I'm certain they want to make things right

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKJ7CXotsX8

and they are able to make things right as soon as Sony gives the green light but Sony is doing no such thing. They'll just continue holding EG accounts hostage.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Epic was not allowed to put any sort of warning about the account being locked into the PS4 ecosystem when players created/merged their accounts onto PS4. As open as they’ve been about it and as badly as they want crossplay, it’s the only thing that makes sense. Of course, it could have also been a very recent development from Sony. Either way there’s only one company standing in the way of you being able to transfer your account to other consoles and it’s Sony.

'Now that we used the PS4 platform to make our battle royale mode super successful and don't have to worry anymore about our game bombing, we are now committed to changing our minds about the contract we signed that forced us to do this but also made us rich and saved our asses. If it wasn't for this deal and the PS4 platform, the game at best would be much less successful and probably wouldn't have even caused this to become an issue in the first place, since PS would have just found something else. Thank you PS for your help but it's our turn to try and screw you now, and you the gaming community are welcome. Aren't we just the greatest everyone? Who doesn't like a backstabber?'

Yes, I know, PS said 'we are for the gamers', which apparently means they need to offer gamers everything that is or could be available in the industry immediately. Why can't they be more like MS and keep their word? MS said no sharing games and always online, and they did that, or wait, they didn't. Well they also said they hated exclusivity and weren't going to do that, and they followed through, or wait, they actually locked down PUBG and 4 third party studios and more. Ok but they definitely mentioned a big reason to get XB1X would be for VR soon when ready, and their working on that, or wait, they aren't bothering with it at all anymore...

If this is how third party studios are going to behave going forward, PS is either going to fold, maybe, or they are going to pour money into as many third party future games as possible and make everything solely exclusive to PS4/PS5 so this can't happen again. It won't be a problem either because that's what MS is doing in a way, and nobody seems to care about that.

I just opened up their two most recent tweets and like every 3rd reply is something about #crossplaysony, #blamesony, #freefortnite, opening accounts, ect.

Last I checked, we don't know what happened behind closed doors between Epic Games and Sony so trying to find fault in what happened behind closed doors is doomed from the start.

What we DO know is EG has pointed the finger at Sony for imposing restrictions and it being beyond EG's control to change that. What we also know is Nintendo and Microsoft allow for console cross-play and cross-platform EG account access. Sony does not.

If Epic Games can provide for Microsoft and Nintendo to share Fortnite accounts, why can't the same be done for Sony? Gonna guess this is Sony's fault, not Epic Games's.

Eric, with all due respect, try to keep your posts short and to the point. I thank you for all the info but it's hard to follow your thought process since it feels all over the place and there's so much that I lose interest in reading it all.

The what we know point is a poor argument. Basically all your saying is I don't want to think any further than what's thrown in my face by the "authorities" in media. Sheep move because the dog is 'in charge'. In reality, the human is standing there taking everything in and directing the dog to make the sheep do what they want, and the sheep have no clue.

Your posts are extremely lengthy, I think you could get your points across fluidly if they were more concise. Just sayin...

i'm not surprised. i'm sure its mostly extreme nintendo fans that all of a sudden can't enjoy gaming on a tv anymore, and switch has changed their lives. all of a sudden cross play the holy grail of gaming. all it takes is 500-1000 to make a lot of noise in reality nobody cares.

Third party studios shouldn't ask for cross-platform access and play. Who do they think they are, game developers trying to please their customers?

I'm more upset about holding EG accounts hostage than the lack of cross-play. Cross-play would be nice too so people who have different platforms can play with their friends.
