Forums - Politics Discussion - What Is Happening To Gaming Forums?

I wouldn’t even attempt to join a site like that. I have many civil discussions here where we had opposite views. I wouldn’t last a day there.

Only go to ResetERA for the insiders and sales data and ignore everything else, that's what I do.

Ok, for context I've just been banned from Resetera for a week. I cannot copy and paste what I actually typed but I'll attempt to explain after I post the reason:

You have been banned for the following reason: User Banned (1 Week): Repeatedly trying to re-frame a gay kiss as an agenda against men.

I found the opening scene of TLOU2 problematic and many others (on other forums) had too. Of course the homophobic card was pulled immediately. I was merely pointing out that just because those people found that scene problematic doesn't mean they're automatically homophobic. I said I thought the kiss in Left Behind was the most beautiful and moving scene I'd ever seen in a video game, and I stand by that. This was Neil at his best. This scene however felt forced, manufactured and corny.

I said pretty much the same thing about Left Behind (it was really well done) and the same about the opening scene in TLOU 2 E3 2018 trailer (it felt rather forced) recently and got called for supposedly double standards.

You're complaining about poor moderation on a known SJW hive-mind site? Like, no shit Sherlock

Ive never been in that site but if its really one of them SJW dominated sites then i wouldnt even worry about getting banned.

half resetera mods are female and they have been there for few months.
extremely defensive.

honestly this is the first comment I ever made about women in video games I never join these discussions ever but they irked me on that forum.

Sorry if I missed it, but what exactly is the issue with that scene? The OP says "My problem is this" and then just simply talks about what happened in the trailer. What is the issue with the transition there? It isn't supposed to be subtle. Subtlety would ruin the entire point of a transition like that. Scenes like this are quite common in post-apocalyptic media, to show how these situations were thrust on these people. To show how they were forced from the life they were supposed to lead into this brutal life which they never asked for. The use of the line "They should be terrified of you" is a way of demonstrating that change, by taken something that is innocent in an average situation and showing how such an idea is twisted by the situation the characters were forced into.

That was the narrative intent.

It's not just Resetera though. I'm using my own experience to ask a broader question. As you've said, you never join in with a discussion about women. I recently starting noticing I was self moderating and would back out of threads because I knew I couldn't say what I wanted to. This is the result of actually testing the waters ... and look what happened. Freedom of speech is at risk here and what makes this sinister to me is it's actually entering our minds. We are now self policing instead of expressing ourselves honestly and freely. We are being made to feel guilty for having rational and intelligent thoughts. Nuance is dying. It's as if thought itself is under threat and the process of thinking is now simply the act of remembering what someone else has told us to think. If we don't think the way the extremist want us to think, we are marginalised and demonised with the worse possible labels.

Freedom of speech doesn’t apply to private entities. Freedom of speech protects you from government persecution. For example, getting locked up because you trash talked trump. Americans are protected by the first amendment.

Ultimately it’s their business and their site, they can do whatever they want. If they have enough echos to sustain themselves then they don’t need you. It sounds like their goal is to create an echo chamber and weed out dissent. There is nothing you can do about it, there is no use dwelling on it. The only reasonable solution is finding a site where you don’t have to self censor or create your own site.

I think it may be worth adding to this conversation that the developers have responded to these ridiculous queries by the conservative thought police concerning their motivations:

“What’s important in this game is showing some teenage life,” Margenau said. “And that means romance, it means angst, it means complicated relationships with your parental figure and your friends around you. And a part of what we’re showing here is just part of that kind of teenage romance of, yeah, she happens to be gay. She’s into someone who’s been a friend for a long time, Dina.”

“We’re just interested in an honest portrayal of the trail of the world,” Newman said. “And it’s not an agenda that’s driving this. We’re just interested in creating unique characters that are honestly portrayed in a way that is, we think, relevant to the world as it is.”

That subject aside, the fact that there are conspiracy theories about agendas EVERY SINGLE time there's focus on someone who doesn't check every box on the male/Caucasian/straight checklist is also very toxic behavior and tiring for people to read.

I'm noticing this a lot too.  No matter what the intention of the writer are, you get people complaining about agendas being forced down their throats. People don't take things at face value anymore, and it's pretty frustrating to constantly see.

Spoiler alert: There isn't always an agenda.

I frequent roughly 6-7 gaming sites and 5 political sites and this is the only site of all of them on which I constantly see the people making a fuss about SJWs/diversity/hive minds/homophobia. I don’t understand why if you’re not comfortable or don’t like something you just don’t move on from it.

I heavily agree with both of these statements. I think the vast majority of people were too busy looking at the gameplay to be offended, but a very large portion of VGChartz has this delusion of persecution.

As for the agenda, it most certainly is clear that it is pushed sometimes, and others it's just there, but then it's a personal choice to believe if you think the intention is to slowly or eventually push an agenda, or if this is simply just a form of entertainment period. Truthfully there is almost always an agenda of some sort and to some degree these days, even though sometimes it's well hidden and not blatantly obvious. That doesn't always mean the entire content should be viewed negatively though.

The problem you end up with however, is that people get set in their ways and changing perception is not easy to do, and sometimes is flat out wrong to do depending on what your aiming for. A great example, not entertainment related however, is when muscle cars in NA slowly became something else, more so trying to copy Euro exotics in a way. People wouldn't have it and model after model disappeared. They slowly started making a comeback however, because one company made a "bold" move and simply went back to much more of an old school design all around, and it brought the entire muscle car genre back. Some things shouldn't or maybe even can't be changed at their core.

That's why starting a new franchise to offer a new point of view makes sense, and why TLOU2 shouldn't be immediately taken as pushing an agenda because the story could easily go that way based on what we know so far about the characters. Mind you, UC4 ended the 'white male version' of the series and was replaced with a 'multicultural female version' in UCLL. Some may see that as the stories natural progression, and some may see forcing an agenda. If Nadine and Chloe ever end up getting a little 'too close', then I think you could safely assume an agenda is probably at play.

As for the whole, if you don't like something just move on comment, it's not that simple at all. I could easily say, well why didn't the Europeans and Russians and Africans, etc, all just leave if the Nazi's wanted their territory? Why didn't the rest of the world mind their own business? The Nazi's clearly "knew" they were the superior race and "knew" it was their destiny to cleanse the planet of the rest of the "useless" non Aryan human race. On one hand this seems obviously ridiculous because how could you think that the Nazi's were right in their thinking, but the truth is that nobody knows exactly how the world as a whole would be today if they had actually completed their goal.

I think most everyone will agree that stopping the plague that was the Nazi regime from taking over the world was the more logical choice. Based on that, when the world now see's trends like strong independent females, LGBT, SJW, etc, characters and media growing, that is bleeding into everyday life causing chaos, they can't help but wonder if it's a good thing or not, and some people are going to see it as negative and naturally fight against it. The truth is the world has never seen a time like this and is walking into 'uncharted' territory. It may not be a problem, and it may end up being a huge problem. All we really have to go by is our history, and that history isn't anything like what is being pushed today, and most people fear change at the very least.

Right now you have some people trying to formulate new blends of soup, some who enjoy different types, and others who like their same old chicken noodle. If you try to force that new blend down the throats of the chicken noodlers, even if only a spoonful at a time, your going to get soup spit back in your face and the bowl dumped on your head. As of today, you have a lot of loud people trying to force it by using existing media and entertainment, and their getting nowhere because they are changing the historical direction of it. Stop forcing it and try to sell it in an original and logical way that doesn't upset the chicken noodlers, because they are the one's who set the Nazi's straight and they'll do it again if they are pushed too far, just in a more polite less physical way this time. Allowing people to be left alone to their own devices isn't a crime as long as they are doing so peacefully.
