Because there's plenty of fantastic JRPGs on 3DS with similar (or better) graphics that launched at $40. I'm pretty sure that the price won't effect sales much, but I do think it should be cheaper than what it is.

Name one of them.

Bravely Default
Bravely Second
 SMT IV
 SMT IV Apocalypse
 Etrian Odyssey Untold
 Etrian Odyssey Untold 2
 Etrian Odyssey IV
 Etrian Odyssey V
 Persona Q
 SMT: Devil Survivor 2
 SMT: Strange Journey Redux
 Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology
 Pokemon X/Y
 Pokemon Sun/Moon

1-2 mil should be reached, looks like a very interresting jrpg, and didn't see a problem to reach this goal

Reading this thread and talking to my friends I see why some think between 1-2 million. But I think it really should sell 3+.

People saying the graphics are retro or like 3DS, man that is ridiculous. Stop watching bad youtube videos. Have you played the demo? It's actually one of the best looking games I've ever played. Full of depth-of-field tricks, particle effects, and amazing water and snow etc. There's nothing indie about this game. Also has some of the best music ever.

The style is actually much more approachable than Xenoblade 2, and the subject matter more mainstream. You don't have a 3D camera. Tons of people love good games that don't require constant camera control (the worst thing about the 3D generation is the need to control the camera. Some people forget when you could play games for hours and focus on gameplay, not cameras).

I really think this game should appeal dramatically to Japanese gamers, especially since it is one of the easiest to play on the go. 3+ over the next 12 months. The install base has increased a lot since Xenoblade 2 released, and there is little competition with other games for the next few months.

I really think the asking price of this is just too damn high.

I didn't ask you to make a list of all the JRPG's present on the 3DS, I ask you to name me a game that has similar or better graphics than Octopath Traveler.

Too bad none of them have.

And please, aesthetics =/= graphics

Octopath uses alphamaps for almost all characters. Most of the games I listed use full 3D models for characters. So, yeah all those games do have better or equal graphics.

N64 games like Quest 64 used 3d models doesn't mean the games back then are graphically better I think you're mistaking style and approach for graphics, I'm playing Bravely second now a game you listed and can tell you straight it's nowhere close to being graphically better.

Of course not. Those are N64 games with their horrible draw distances, simple models, etc. In general, games that use 2D alphamaps for characters are worse off graphically (and cheaper to make) than games that use full 3D models. Your argument "not all 3D games are better, therefore 3DS games aren't better" is equal to saying "not all smoke leads to fire, therefore there is no fire". The important thing to remember here is not all, but most do, in both cases.

It goes beyond the alphamaps though. Octopath uses intentionally pixelated textures for the characters. Buildings are simple models that have been expertly textured over to give a retro feel.

Don't get me wrong, I'm buying the game regardless of review scores, and am looking forward to it. I just don't think $60 is a fair price tag for something that could have been done on 3DS.

Edit: Just gonna go ahead and say that Octopath may not be that impressive graphically, but it has more style and art direction than most AAA games.

Read what you posted I never even mentioned anything about 3DS games for a start or the argument you're babbling about but can tell you straight non of the games you mentioned are graphically better than Octopath, I've played them.

Lucky if it does a million IMO. These types of games always struggle to sell.

More than Bravely Default .
