According to the CEO of Nvidia, it will take some time until the release of their next-gen GPU's.

I've really hoped to see them in the next months as the rumors speculated, but I got a feeling they will release next year. 

Complete specs are still unknown, but rumors say, that the GDDR6 RAM could be faster than HBM2. I can't wait to see more about it and how big the leap to current gen will be. I guess they will announce more in august.

By what measure?
Are you comparing super high-end overclocked GDDR6 in labs, to the HBM that's in professional/consumer products today.

Current HBM 2 chips can run at higher clocks than to ones AMD put in the RX Vega cards.
RX Vega only has two stacks of HBM 2 too, double that and you massively increase the card's bandwidth (whilst also increasing the price).

"Zwar ist GDDR6 nur eine Weiterentwicklung von GDDR5 und GDDR5X, das aktuell auf Geforce-Modellen verbaut wird, doch der neue Standard erlaubt durch Veränderungen schnellere Datenübertragungen bei geringerem Energieverbrauch. Die Spezifikationen der JEDEC sehen 14 Gigabit pro Sekunde vor, doch Micron hat laut dem Bericht schon festgestellt, dass ihre Chips auch 16,5 Gb/s oder mehr erreichen können. Mit einer geringen Anhebung der Spannung waren bei Tests demnach sogar 20 Gb/s möglich. GDDR6 wäre dann auf einer Grafikkarte mit einem 256-Bit-Speicherinterface in der Lage, 640 GByte pro Sekunde zu übertragen. Das wäre fast so schnell wie das HBM2 auf einer Nvidia Titan V mit 652,8 GByte/s. To sum that up: by increasing a tiny bit of the voltage they could archive a bandwidth of 20Gb /s. On a 256 bit interface it could reach a speed of 640 GByte per second. That would be as fast as the HBM2 on a Nvidia Titan V with 652,8GByte/s.  A card with a 384 Bit memory interface and GGDR6 would be close to 1TByte/s. 

It's not me who does the comparing, I just spread the rumor in what has been, like you already stated, tested in labs by overclocking the memory.

Using Hynix's GDDR6 on a 384-bit memory bus yields 768GB/s of bandwidth.
That is 14Gbps memory, 16Gbps should already be rolling out which would (if everything else was kept equal) provide 875GB/s of bandwidth, 20Gbps memory would take that up a notch again.

Whether GDDR6 ends up being faster than HBM2 is entirely down to how it is implemented.

You can have GDDR5 Ram faster than HBM2 if you take it wide enough.

Been waiting for a worthy upgrade to my 1080 Tis since last November when the prices went up due to goddamn mining. Very interesting to learn about the GDDR6(albeit in the form of rumor)

 It'd certainly boil down to trade-off when the chip manufacturers (both Samsung and Hynix) facilitate mass production with low cost.  HBM 3 is already looking into this aspect and where we could see cards coming out in 2019 using it. Currently V100 Tesla(Nvidia Data Centre/workstation) has already achieved close to 900 GBytes/second(courtesy of HBM2/4096-bit). The series with HBM 3 will clearly intend to be very close or surpass that mark even with lesser memory bit interface and cost intended for gamers.

I am in no rush for an upgrade. Besides this will increase the jump between the 10 to 11 series which will he better value in the long run



Well, some journalists have said that board partners still haven't been given details about the new chips, so it's not too surprising. But we also have to remember that this is a sector where "not coming soon" or "it's a long time", doesn't have to mean the same as in the real world. Plus its a PR meeting, with all it means.

I can still see Nvidia launching the new cards (only in Founders Edition versions) in September, with board partners having to wait until the end of the year to launch their custom products.

however very informative discussions on this thread, speeds that make a gamer drool. something like saying doughnuts around homer..... hahaha
