9 out of top 10 games on twitch are multiplayer titles.
Singleplayer games will be more and more niche as time goes by.

Even mobile games have a strong focus on multiplayer these days.

Possibly the worst example imaginable.

That is like going to a candy store and going "who here buys candy?"

Twitch is very much biased toward multiplayer games. it is endless content, no story (so no explanation no talking over it etc), and more importantly it allows the audience to join in with them.

The fact Detroit is even trending despite having any of that easily speaks to the power of single player. And if you want more examples go look into God of war, and Horizon zero dawn.

If Twitch is a bad indicator, give me a better alternative for it.

Time spent on these games? Multiplayer games are easily heads and shoulders above single player games.

Sales figures? The best selling games these days have a strong multiplayer focus or are multiplayer only.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

" we see a lot of interest from our players in more community-driven ongoing franchises." because all the people interested in single-player games have abandoned your platform leaving you with a very large proportion of gamers who are only interested in the social/community/multiplayer stuff. And that's why Xb one has 37.5 million in sales and PS4 has 79M in sales and Switch is probably going to catch up and overtake Xb one possibly before Xb one's replacement is launched.

How about console appeal? GoW set multiple records for the ps4 as a single player game.  SoT fell off the switch section in what less than a month?

Then again that is unfair to Detroit that is still in the top 10 where as SoD isn't anywhere to be seen. Although it did sell well apparently.

Cuphead did very well across multiple systems.  And of course everyone is expecting RDR2 to dominate.

Haven't you heard that SoT after 5 years will have sold more than GoW?

As much as I hate it, I must agree with you.

Thank God I was able to play that SP only games like Persona 5, Nier, and more... it's just not the same, if I were forced to co-op with other players, read messages and other stuff.

IT's not like they completely given up on SP. State of Decay, Forza, Cuphead, Ori, Super Lucky's Tale, ALL SINGLEPLAYER. With multiplayer as a choice for additional fun with friends.

But SP only titles is a risky investment. If one thing about the game isn't good, then you're instantly out 100 million dollars. Quantum Break was quite the disaster.

So long as their big titles like Gears and Halo got their campaign modes, Xbox users won't care. I'm interested to see how Playground handles Fable 4. Will it be MP only, or SP with MP as a choice. Those are the best games, with SP main priority, and MP there for added fun with friends (CO-OP, PvP).

Most of you are missing the point , it's doesn't have to be one or the other , what MS didn't show in the statement by big booty was a commitment to tackle the areas it is deficient in, now that might be all well and good if Sony was lacking in MP focused games but they aren't, what they have done is decided that 3rd party can handle that side and why push resources into creating games for what is an already crowded market place or spend money buying mp games that are likely tor come to your system anyway or have another similar game fill the void.

I would add to your statement that those community driven franchises are on the PS4 giving players the best of both worlds.

Yep, Sony even said themselves that they invested in strong SP narrative driven games because the rest was well covered by 3rd parties.
