That "Executioner's Cleave" is so satisfying when it's timed correctly.

Oh yeah it's by far one of the most satisfying parts of combat in the game, and it's as if you can actually feel the power behind it... so good!

Yes, of course I realize that the previous games had one execution for enemies too. But it's 2018. It's PS4. It's next gen. Are we supposed to be ok with old, lazy mechanics up to now? That's like saying we can forgive games like mass effect andromeda for having last gen facial animations.

And no, sorry, but the R2 axe move isn't an execution. It's an attack. You can do it anytime and it doesn't require any special conditions. It just looks like an execution when the guy is low health. Similar to any axe move kill. The R3 execution is supposed to be special and unique.

But facial animations =/= content... the execution animations look fine, you're basically saying the "lack" of executions (Which there aren't based on the series' history) is equal to badly handled animation of another game. Fixing the facial animations on Andromeda won't add more content to the game, but adding more execution animations will. In the case of God of War it's nothing to do with "old mechanics".

As for the last part, I'm getting bored of trying to convince you, after all it's just an opinion anyway, but even throughout the game I had more fun holding R2 for a cleave execution than stunning them and pressing R3 since I preferred fighting with my axe over barehands anyway, and I thought axe executions were more brutal in terms of appearance when it came to fighting the majority of enemies.

Honestly, you're better off just dropping this argument, and the attitude, and moving on to talk about any other aspects of your review, since this conversation clearly isn't going the way either of us expected.

You're right. This isn't going the right way. However, I did convince you to agree that there is, in fact, one animation per enemy type. That's all that matters, that we agree on the fact. You think it's okay, I think it's not.

I'm just more demanding, I suppose.

I mean, if that's what you think happened, and you're happy with the outcome... then sure, lol. Either way cleave is the far superior way to kill an enemy in most cases, it looks cool, makes you feel cool, and you don't need to build up the stun bar! :P

If you read the rest of the review, I did say that the combat is awesome, that the action is awesome, etc. I love using the R2 axe move too. It's part of the combat.

I'm only complaining about the R3 execution animations.

Agree overall, but I disagree about the mom and the monsters' variety.
The point of the story is to unveil slowly the mystery of the mom, the birth of Atreus, and what Kratos did with this new family overall. So it's normal to not have all the info at first. The end game twist is literally the explanation of the mom's origins, the fact that we learned about her slowly during the whole game was greatly done IMO.
For the enemies, you're exaggerating. Sure, the most powerful ennemies are not that different. But you have overall a large enough number of ennemies. When you do the Muspelheim trials where you have to avoid all hits, you should realize how many different ennemies with different attacks there are, with different strategies for each. It's surely more than most games, no complaints from me here.

About the mother, it's like this. While you're playing the story, if you aren't invested in the purpose of what you're doing, there's a chance that you just end up giving up on it. I actually forgot what I was doing sometimes because I simply didn't care about the objective.

Check the trophy information about the game. Only like 25-30% end up finishing the story. I think that's a direct result of the game not giving any info on the mom at all and people losing interest in finishing the game.

About the enemies, there are only a dozen types but a lot more reskins. I don't consider shield draugr different from heavy draugr. These are the same type just given a different weapon. To me, it's not enough. It gets boring after a while killing the same creatures over and over again. This is especially true if you've played as much as I did. Maybe it won't be so obvious on a normal playthrough.

If you look at different games, you'll see that 25-30% of players finishing the story is very good, most games don't have that much. So the game is really engaging enough.

And yes, shield draugr and heavy draugr are different. You actually want reskins, and it's not. You want monster who look different (reskin), while the game provides you monster who are from the same race but are very different gameplay wise. Seriously, you can't tell me that you did the entire trials without changing your attack style between the different ennemies. You have 100 enemies trials, and yet it will be very varied during the trials from one wave to the next.

You want them to invent 50 different races just to change their look, just to look different. What about WW2 games, do you complain that you only shoot humans?

C'mon. We're talking about a AAA 10/10 game here. 25% for a 10/10? If you're giving such high marks you can't compare it to how other games do. If it's really 10/10, it should be finished by more people. C'mon. Stop being so forgiving yet giving it a perfect score.

And no, I don't need 50 types. But a dozen? For a 10/10 game? A dozen monster types? That's simply not good enough.

See, my point is that having these issues is specifically for this game because we're giving it high marks. High marks for everything so everything has to be high standard. Why forgive it then if some parts fall short? If this were a different game, you wouldn't forgive it too.

you're a brave man OP for openly criticizing the game. Kudos to you. I agree with some of your nitpicks like puzzles and what not, but the stuff about the story(mother) i gotta disagree with there.
