Forums - Sales Discussion - Comparison of sales of multiplat releases (PS4 vs. Xbox One vs. Switch)

Rab said:

Should have done this as a software to hardware ratio, also most of those games listed are for lifetime, with some games being released far earlier on some systems fudging the result

very few games listed are time synced, or are not run long enough to compare legs, and if so are mostly ones that weren't released at the same time giving some advantage to systems with earlier release dates

A lot to negate from those petty graphics, but statistics have always been like that, quite selective out of context

Well, as I said earlier, over a few months usually the earlier release date does not matter much. You can look here though at the games that released on all three platforms at the same time.

Wow, you put a look of work into this! I'm sure someone else had already mentioned this by now, but I'd be interested in seeing a comparison taking install base of hardware into consideration, as the Switch is newer and shouldn't be expected to sell the same software as it will when it catches up to the other two.

Well, the evidence says that sales do only marginally increase with bigger install base. That may differ from title to title, but generally it is true. It is easy to explain: a bigger user-base is also a more diverse user-base. Say a console has FIFA as launch-game, then many FIFA-fans will flock to it. Later on Call of Duty is released, which brings COD-fans to buy the system. Not many of these will buy more FIFA.

But for fun, let's see attach rates - for FIFA 18 as an example (as hardware keeps the same you can guess from above market shares, how it looks in comparison for different games).

PS4: 11,455,017 (copies of FIFA) / 80,613,435 (PS4 units) = 14.2%

XBox One: 2,998,421 / 37,968,073 = 7.8%

Switch: 938,691 / 18,352,209 = 5.1%

Bomberman never did well on PS, and would not have done so well on Switch if it weren't a launch title.

Ys8 PS4 numbers only include Japan sales.

Speculation about Bomberman being a launch title. Nearly all titles here have some things to say for some platform in one way or another. So nearly everything here is a late port for Switch, Bomberman pretty much the only late port for PS4 and XB1. And Ys, yes, launch numbers for PS4 are only Japan, as it released later worldwide. The overall sales data in the OP contains also the sales in other regions, but again as it is a late port for Switch, Switch version is bound to close in in the following weeks.

But it must be fine. Nintendo fans hound me because the data is unfair for Switch, PS4 fans give me shit because the data is unfair for PS4. So I must've got it right.

Very interesting thread. Just an idea but could you have an icon for games with staggered launches and another for games with a common launch on all platforms? It would help contextualize the results for each line.

Hmm, it's a thought. I'll see what I can do until the next update.

And PS4 the console of angsty teens that need to reconfirm their non-existant maturity by shedding lots of blood in a game.

I'm playing Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 2 the second time around on the PSTV.  So where does that put me...?

As a PSTV/Vita TV owner (basically my only console from the past decade) that describes me to a T. Why is there so much dead skin?
