Is a solid game for the most part, it got some points that reaches some high highs and some very low lows.

A lot of mechanics, some polished enough, some really badly managed. Combat can be pretty nice, but it takes a long time to take off.

It has a good enough story when it pick ups and the characters are pretty solid.

Overall for me I spent like half my playtime being frustated, so is a game that while it has some great positives it isn't something I can wholeheartly recommend.

Interesting .. can you tell me what where your biggest frustrations with the game ?

I’ve in a similar situation as OP. I’ve been looking this game since launch but really afraid of not liking it. I’ve just played around 10 hours of Xenoblade X on Wii U and could never really get around the mechanics, However, Xenoblade 2 seems to give a different vibe: I do like anime and it’s soundtrack seems amazing, however I fear combat might be complex. So should I give it a try, continue playing X or get the original Xenoblade on Wii U and see how it plays?

X plays differently to XBC2 the latter is easier to get into but still maintains a lot of depth.

I've beaten both, and I think that Xenoblade 2 is much better game. The story is better, the battle mechanics are more interesting (yet also simpler) and it's also portable. If you want to get one, I definitely recommend 2 over X.

But maybe I'm just salty I could never bring down Telethia the Endbringer. ;)

Well, let'see. First of all waiting 20 hours for the combat to get fun, the pacing of how much mechanics and party members you unlock as you go really hold back the fun factor of the battle system, is only after that time frame for me that I get enough depth with the party and the enemies when the combat becomes enjoyable.

When I tried to do sidequests, a good chunk of them can drag in its steps, but what is really infuriating for me, was that, you do well in say 4 out of the 5 steps of the quest and then you get hit by annoying walls like the field skills and I just can't bother with it afterwards.

Also how some parts of the menu managing can be slow like the merc mission system or checking some upgrades with your characters, kinda piles up on my annoyances.

There are some more specific frustrations but that is spoiler territory.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

I have not played Xeno 2, but i loved Xeno X.

To know if Xeno X is for you here is my view:

You like space operas, Xenosaga/Xenogears more than Xenoblade 1.
You enjoy Open worlds with alot of depth. Think offline MMO.
You are ok with having the game focused on the exploration more than the story.
You love mechs and felt they were missing in Xenoblade.

I highly recommend it, if it wasn't for Zelda it'd be my 2017 GOTY, and was easily my favorite JRPG of last year.

Probably not a popular opinion based on reviews, but I'd say Xenoblade 2 is at least comparable in quality to the first game. It has a lot more mechanics, but it does a nice job easing you into them. The story is fantastic, characters are endearing, and the OST is god-tier. I also enjoyed the art-style a lot more than the previous games. It's more animated, sure, but it also feels more timeless overall.

It also has Mythra, which is enough of a reason to buy the game on its own.

first of all, understand this - part of what made Xenoblade great was its underdog status. nobody saw the game coming, and that only seemed to multiply the enjoyment people were able to take from it.so when you start playing Xenoblade 2, you will have some higher expectations. that being said..

the battle mechanics work a bit differently, it feels weird at first but learning how each element of the battle system works in amazingly fun and rewarding. IMO, Xenoblade 2 has better battle mechanics than 1 and X by far. you dont just have to sit around waiting idly for your arts to fill up again, and there are special elemental combos that can be fun to mess around with.

the story is a bit shorter, or so ive found. ive played through Xenoblade twice with both runs lasting around 90 hours. Xenoblade 2 took me around 70. im not complaining at all though. Xenoblade 2 in every imaginable aspect has a story that rivals the level of the original (and my god will you love the ending). although to my surprise, it has more of an anime feel than Xenoblade 1, with some exaggerated facial expressions and more witty banter than expected. i thought it was fun, not what i was expecting, but i did enjoy the story. and just like in the first game, each character has their own quirk that makes for some great interactions with the group, and this time around everyone isnt just trying to avenge their dead boyfriend/girlfriend, so that releases some of the tension.

as for the music, i felt it was amazing. here, take a listen to this -

Dear lord this track still gets me hyped as f*ck. The score is definitely the best thing about the game. I also adored Walking With You.

The feels :'(

I don't know, I'm 10 hours in... and I feel it's a pretty frustrating game. The navigation arrow that tells you were to go works like shit, flying enemies come out of nowhere while you're fighting some other monsters and proceed to outnumber you and kick your ass, those supposed "special" core crystals gave pretty normal blades, having to stay still to attack is a pretty stupid decision, travelling around the world is slow and a pain in the ass compared to X, Tora and Rex are some of the most annoying characters I've seen in a videogame (they are even worse than Loki in Bayonetta 2)... and missions to progress the story are super lame. Like... I need this so go get it... oh, but I forgot to tell you that I need this other thing that is located on the other side of the continent...

I don't know, maybe it gets better... but right now I feel disappointed.
