I'll be honest in saying I'm a casual fan of Star Wars. I've seen bits and pieces of the original trilogy to where I have a general understanding of the core characters, but haven't seen them in their entirety to understand the lore and world in general. I've seen most of the prequels, compared to the original parts I've seen they're far inferior but nothing god awful.
I used to like Force Awakens, and I still like Rouge One and the way it implemented original characters with the story. Chirrut and Baze weren't good characters just because they were Asian, they were good because they were badasses and weren't grading and pointless compared to characters such as Rose. That being said, TLJ shat on that trilogy in its entirety. It's the same with The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2. The first one wasn't inherently bad, but the way the second film shat on the world the 1st built up was insulting, and as such I can only watch the original Spider-Man trilogy and Homecoming from now on.
TLJ took anything I found interesting and wanted expanded upon and told me to go fuck myself. I'm fine with political commentary, even if I don't agree with it, as long as it's subtle. The original trilogy had political messaging in it, but it wasn't blatant like in TLJ. The casino scene nearly made me walk out of the theater all together. These people will make more money on this one movie alone than I probably will my entire life, and yet they're lecturing me about how rich people are evil?! The hypocrisy of that statement alone turned me off from the rest of the movie alone.
This one example shows just how out of touch Disney is with what Star Wars is and what makes it good and cherished by many. Disney sees a cash cow that they can rake money in after every release, whereas fans see these movies as life lessons and things they grew from. I'm not saying all rabid SW fans are rationale because every base has their crazies, but once Disney makes too many of these films that are action based instead of world building and life changing, the younger audience will never give a damn and the lifelong fans will lose interest. Disney is literally turning a phenomenon into a torture victim, and I can see Star Wars becoming unpopular with more releases.
TLJ ruined everything so much that I have no interest in going back to watch the original trilogy. If kids feel the same I do, Star Wars will not remain relevant forever.
