If he's actively making money off of a franchise, then it's stupid to make fun of the franchise's fandom. Period.

I think it's more than okay to make fun of a portion of the fanbase if said portion are bigoted idiots.

However, from the above Twitter thread he's still working for them and writing a Darth Vader comic, so you'd expect someone at Disney to slap his wrists for the drama.

The problem is that there is a group of people that everytime someone disagrees with them (especially those who didn't like TLJ) they immediately use the Sex or Race card.

And here is the thing: Yes, there are racist and sexist everywhere (and in every fandom) BUT if those people were so numerous in the Star Wars fanbase then TFA, RO and even TLJ wouldn't have made nearly as much money as they did.

So yes, I find it EXTREMELY disrespectful everytime someone close to Lucas Film uses those terms implying that a big portion of the fanbase is like that.

He didn't paint a big portion of the fanbase like it at all, he said he fell down a weird rabbit hole of shitty Star Wars fans. And he's not wrong. I see a lot of weird and shitty Star Wars "fans" online.

Anyway, I found the Twitter thread, it wasn't deleted or unprovoked as Azuren thought -

And again, I really don't think he's wrong.

Star Wars fans are quite shitty, I hate to say it, it's a toxic fanbase in a lot of respects. Jake Lloyd (the actor who played Kid Anakin) endured a lot of harassment over the years which contributed to a mental breakdown, stuff like that is just gross. I don't like the prequels but how much of an asshole do you have to be to harass some kid that was just doing his job? Even Star Trek fans and certainly Marvel fans are not that shitty.

No one cares if Iron Man 2 & 3 were ass or that Thor 2 sucked or that every second Star Trek film is underwhelming (it's a running joke by now, which most fans take in good humor) or that the new Hobbit trilogy wasn't very good.

The dude above is getting harassed as a Star Wars book author? LOL. What losers, get a fucking life.

Skimming through several of those tweets, it seems like the concept that this guy is most offended by isn't anything ideology related within the Star Wars fandom, but rather the (correct) assumption of fans that they can have a profound influence on the failure or success of your product. He also seems to be under the impression that any time any fan takes issue with said product, to the point of wanting it to "fail," or do poorly to the point of forcing a change of direction, that this makes them a hater, rather than a real fan.

That's just an absurdly dismissive attitude, honestly.

I mean, you'll get no argument from me that a lot of people within hardcore fanbases - of any huge franchise or property - can be extremely toxic. but half of what he said there had nothing to do with that.

The problem is that he is lumping a very big portion of the fanbase in with any true bigots.  The company line, for now, is basically if you don't like the way the SW franchise is being handled and where its headed, for whatever reason, you are lumped in with the incredibly small minority that do have problems with their being women or minorities in the films.  And its ok for the crew to bash and call you names.  It's the same thing Sony and crew tried to pull with Ghostbusters '16.  Surprise, it didn't exactly work out for them, either.

It's also hilarious how he says they had no impact on TLJ, yet its take was $730M (interestingly an amount Disney wishes Solo would do) less than TFA.  Obviously they had a big impact.

Yea.  It seems Disney and crew don't want fans, some of which will like the way you are going, some will hate it, and some will be meh about the product.  They want unquestioning fanboys who will eat up any product they shit out.  Mediocrity should be good enough for the (once) largest film franchise in history.  And if you aren't a fanboy, you are obviously just a bigot/incel/racist/misogynist.

Except there are a number of unbigoted reasons to strongly dislike how Star Wars has been handled of late.

His tweets look insanely paranoid to me, i would almost say extremist. :p He also uses every bad terms possible, Sexist, Racist ,Misognist,Ignorant...

But i do hope the best for the guy, hes probably just shocked by what happened.

And that doesn't make it okay for creators involved in Star Wars to double down and continue making fun of their fandom after Solo bombed.

That would depend on if he's still working with Disney on Star Wars.

If he's no longer working on it? Fair game.

Chuck Wendig is the author the upcoming Darth Vader annual that releases in July. He works for Lucasfilm.

A 66% drop is devastating for a movie that made 84 million its first weekend.

77%. It had a miserable 2nd Friday

I believe this movie is still taking the brunt from the tail end of TLJ controversy. When it comes to ratings, HS > TLJ.
