Forums - Sony Discussion - Detroit: Become Human Reviews: 79 Metacritic, 80 OpenCritic

That's about what I expected. It's a far more niche game than the usual GoW, Mario or Halos of gaming, that I think have much broader appeal. Some people will really like it, some will tolerate and others loathe it. I will have to get it at some point.

Was hoping for a higher score, at least it's an improvement on their last game.

I don't think this type of game is ever going to get a high metascore.  There are simply too many people who do not enjoy this style of gameplay.

And it's usually reviewers who don't like the genre who'll review it.

I remember looking for the MC score of a Vita/PS4 visual novel, and was surprised to see that there was something like 15 points of difference between the 2. Bad port from Vita to PS4? Nope. The Vita reviewers were all saying "very good visual novel", while part of the PS4 reviewers were saying "What is that? Too much text, I don't like to read so much, I want gameplay, it sucks!".

So yeah, some kind of games will always be limited in score by the low intellect of part of the reviewers,  completely unable to understand that not all games are based on "pew pew pew", sadly...

A bit dissapointed.

He you shouldn't

I really expect lower after all the cage hate

The game would score higher if there was no controversy around cage

Typical of a "journalist" at GS to complain about flow charts, bet she's never seen one before.

Many editors say the game has the most interesting characters of the year (currently) and the atmosphere / staging is incredible - especially the story, emotions, soundtracks and decision possibilities are praised :) A game with love to detail and its beautiful. I'm looking forward to tomorrow :)

Areajugones: "Quantic Dream surpasses everything it has done before with Detroit: Become Human. A huge script allows for a thrilling story to have multiple layers that, at the same time, deal with topics such as slavery, the human condition or the concept of identity. A real masterpiece of the genre". 95 %

Same devs, but as you can see. Detroit has far better reviews :)

Exactly how you made it look like one of the best games of the year, someone can just as easily make it look like a mediocre game. Look:

Kotaku - "Part of my frustration with Detroit is that I've spent the last several years watching other game developers make far better narrative-focused games, often with substantially fewer resources."
VideoGamer - 4/10
Digitally Downloaded - 2/5
Slant Magazine - 2.5/5
God is a Geek - 5/10
Variety - "The obvious comparisons to racial and religious persecution feel uncomfortable at times, with too much spoon-fed to the player."
Metro GameCentral - 6/10
Gadgets 360 - 6/10
Digital Chumps - 6.5/10
Paste Magazine - 6.7/10
TrustedReviews - 3.5/5
VG247 - "The biggest crime a piece of media can make is to be boring and Detroit is as guilty as can be."
Push Square - 7/10
USGamer - 3.5/5
AusGamer - 7/10
Destructoid - 7/10
CGMagazine - 7/10
GameSpot - 7/10
Oyungezer Online - 7/10
The Verge - "All of that work feels wasted, tied to a story that, by the end, feels meaningless."

Don't read just the good reviews or just the bad ones. For you to see the bigger picture, you have to read reviews from both sides. If you only read the reviews that give the game great scores, you'll probably end up disappointed.

The truth is Detroit Become Human doesn't seem to be a masterpiece nor a mediocre game, but a pretty good one.

Yes, but it's more like "Heavy Rain" - with more decision-possibilities and details in the gameworld)

The staging and atmosphere is so fantastic, I am very impressed. Too bad that some editors rate it badly - because they do not accept the genre. Video games are so much more than just fun / gameplay. Metal Gear Solid (very profound games, part 1 to 4) and Yakuza are perfect examples - better than any movie and also playable :) In "Detroit Become Human" also psychology and philosophy play a role, thats cool :) I'm so ready for this game. The first/second time I play the game alone, after that with friends at night together :)

Eh, 7/0 is not mediocre (which means not very good).

VideoGamer - 4/10
Digitally Downloaded - 2/5
Slant Magazine - 2.5/5
God is a Geek - 5/10

Those are closer to what mediocre is. Considering it will settle around 77/78, I'd say it's doing fine numerically.

  1. of only average quality;
