Forums - Sony Discussion - PS5: Evidence Points To Backward Compatibility [RUMOUR]

The question is more if Sony wants to implement BC or not. the PS4 would have been powerful enough for BC of the PS3 (if the XBO can do it with the 360, then the PS4 shouldn't have a problem, either), but I remember Sony saying that they didn't want it because while it's much requested, apparently it's seldom used. Maybe they changed their mind again, who knows

@bold

not really, not even close. go check how well the PS3 is emulated even on high end PCs to this day

PS4 games on PS5, to me this is a given. X86 ftw

I believe this to be the direction of Sony unless they believe good will is enough to implement BC.  I do not think Sony feel its all that relevant to include BC, its not like it helped the Xbox gain any momentum.  Instead I can see them putting their resources to other things and letting PS Now be your means for BC.  I do not believe BC is a given on the next PS system.  It probably will come down to how much has or will invest in the feature and is it worth anything to them.  They could feel their platform lead is significant enough where BC isn't that big of a deal as long as they have system defining exclusives.  They can shovel off BC to PS Now if anyone really cares about it.

PS2, DS, and Wii all had backwards compatibility. They all won their generation. Backwards compatibility helps to make sure that early adopters have something good to play while waiting for the first slow two years to pass. It also lowers the price of a new system for people that had the hold system, via trade-ins while flooding the market with cheap last gen machines. Lots of people get into a different brand of consoles, because they picked up the last gen system. How many people grew up playing PS1 games when PS2 was out and then stuck with Sony forever?

If they go with x86 again, there's no reason why PS5 couldn't be BC. If that's the case, then it will be a deliberate decision to kill it and cash in on more "remastered" versions of old games.

It's a rumor and will threat as it, also I don't care about BC. But if they do and doesn't cost much (like over 50USD) to make it I guess it can benefit them

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

the Cell processor arquitecture is so damn complex.   With the PS4 you cant emulate with raw power the PS3.  You would need a much more powerful system like a PS5 and some damn great coded emulator.

Pretty well actually, all it needed was an emulator from a competent team (RPCS3), not what was available before. Most games actually run alot better than on the PS3 now

Makes total sense, and with almost 40 million PS Plus subscribers, having BC helps retain those numbers.

Indeed.

The same reason why Sony canceld PS3 BC. Economic feasibility.

Some people act like its decided by divination of sheep entrails.

The PS3 relied on PS2 hardware parts to be possible. Raising the price of the console.

Something that shouldn't be required if the PS5 sticks to a x86 architecture.
