Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo now selling Switch systems without a dock in Japan

So like I kept insisting after all these past months that the Switch was intentionally designed to be a portable system ... (the dock proves nothing since Vita too had one but clearly nobody confused it for being a home system so time was on my side when Nintendo introduced a new dockless SKU and thanks to that I was vindicated)

The lower price SKU is a good thing since the Switch hasn't been performing on the same level as the 3DS was in Japan during a similar timeframe but it's stupid that they didn't include an AC adapter since it would've been an attractive option to many prospective owners out there whom are many without Switch's ...

Hopefully, they rectify that when launch this new SKU to the international market ...

I think this'll probably be as far as Nintendo goes this year with "price cutting" the Switch ...

If this gets a WW release with an adapter, you can expect lots of "handheld mode only" games, because the handheld only SKU will most likely outsell the full one.

Ugh, I didn't consider that. Fuck that. Handheld mode would look horrible on a TV, which is the only way I play my Switch.

Maybe they saw that the console is not selling as fast as it could, and would do better as a cheaper pure handheld. But it would damage the concept of hybrid and create 2 distinct markets on the console...

Doubt that, its only available on the Nintendo online store in Japan. At the moment its very similar to what they were doing with selling standalone Wii U gamepads.

If this had a worldwide retail release than maybe you eould be onto something.

Nah, that would not make sense. Maybe it's just an option to offer it cheaper with the arrival of Pokemon for those who only want to play Pokemon.

But it could also be a reason for a new handheld SKU, to push smaller developers to make the transition between 3DS and Switch more easily, without having to raise development costs because of the TV mode.

It depends on if they are still fully confident in the hybrid concept potential being bigger than a handheld, or if they changed their mind because maybe the sales are good, but not as good as they hoped.

This does not prove anything. The Switch is a hybrid, period.

That's why I added "But we're not there yet since you still need a dock" ;)

I don't see that happening in large scale unless they change the system so it can no longer be docked at all.

TV mode does not significantly raise development costs though; you don't have to create a whole different set of assets or more detailed ones, you just dial up the resolution.

Oh i'm sorry. I was referring to "Maybe they saw that the console is not selling as fast as it couldThe first year of Switch far exceeded Nintendo's expectations. I do not think they are now considering that the switch is not selling fast enough.
