Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo now selling Switch systems without a dock in Japan

I guess it makes sense for households that already own a Switch and for people who never intends to use the TV-option, but the lack of at least a USB-cable is a dumb decision in my opinion when you consider that third-party products have broken Switch-consoles

It's for people who already have one full Switch set in the house, so they'd already have at least one dock and usb c cable in the house already. Plus usb c is a universal format most people are bound to have at least one cable lying around.

Anyway despite that's it's only exclusive to Nintendo's online store in Japan, it's a good move at having a lower entry point so that every can have their own Switch in the house hold.

Actually... Try and freaking find a cheap USB C adapter that delivers the watts the official switch one does. They are NOT CHEAP. it's not like thouse phone chargers you get everywhere that cost 5 dollars on Amazon.

If you're only going to use it handheld only (which is the only reason you'd buy this bundle if you don't already I have one full Switch set in the house) you don't need as powerful of an adaptor. I just use my phone usb one for charging in handheld mode, works fine. Handheld mode isn't as power consuming as docked mode.

While the CPU and GPU consume less, don't forget that the screen consumes power, too - probably around as much as is saved by underclocking the chips depending on the brightness setting, maybe even more than that at full brightness. So yeah, still need such a powerful adaptor. If your phone adaptor can quickcharge 3.0, it should be fine

I think it's a good option if you've already got a Switch at home. Otherwise, not so much.

It is not surprising that people are reacting to the price and lack of a charger. However, Nintendo seems to be very much a margin-focused company. If you look at Sony's and Nintendo's full year financial reports, you see that Sony's Game Division (Playstation) had about twice as much total revenue as all of Nintendo, but Nintendo was actually more profitable, due to much higher margins.

Well it was going to happen soon or later. Will be interesting how it sells.

Not much, because it's apparently sold exclusively through the My Nintendo online store.

Well in that case I agree haha.

Apparently this is being aimed at people who already own a Switch, so thats their reasoning for not including one.

Hmm, interesting. Makes sense somehow, if multiple members of the household want their Switches for commute, but they still only have on TV.

On the surface this seems like not a bid deal. This is for households that already own a Switch and it is for Japan only.

But what it really means is that they are boosting up their Japanese install base as fast as possible. That means even more Japanese 3rd party games are going to be made. In a year or two there is going to be a flood of Japanese 3rd party exclusives hitting the Switch.

Uncanny. But I'm only happy if I see Etrian Odyssey Switch. Atlus should move.

Doubt that, its only available on the Nintendo online store in Japan. At the moment its very similar to what they were doing with selling standalone Wii U gamepads.

If this had a worldwide retail release than maybe you eould be onto something.

That's why I added "But we're not there yet since you still need a dock" ;)

If this gets a WW release with an adapter, you can expect lots of "handheld mode only" games, because the handheld only SKU will most likely outsell the full one.

So, you really think they went through the trouble to make a single device to play the same games at home as on the go, only to turn around and go back to developing home console and portable games separately again?
