Forums - General Discussion - I'm tired of this overemphasis on diversity spilling into our entertainment.

So it finally happened, battlefield 5 has a female with one arm as part of its cast.

In world war 2.

Wow.

Ultra realism? Just wow. Disgusting, more like. Absolutely forced diversity for the sake of it. Few to no women served the front lines in world war 2, much less ones with one arm! This is ludicrous. Absolutely shameful show of forced diversity.

I'm quessing they gave her the prosthetic arm so no one would dare to critize the female character too harshly.

You wouldn't make fun of disabled people, would you... ?

You're playing a video game, not a simulator.

Right. So let's fool around with all historical materical wherein millions of people died and let their families see how you twist everything.

While you're at it, let the Germans win then. You like that? Or make Hitler into the good guy. Since you think it's ok to fool around with history yeah?

People are mad for different reasons. Personally, I strongly dislike altering existing and established characters (such as Domino in Deadpool 2, or Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four). It's not always bad, but more often than not it's shameless pandering (a good example of it working would be Nick Fury, though he is based on Ultimate Nick Fury from the Ultimate Marvel line, so he's got precedence).

Johnny storm was like 13 when he first went into space but I haven't heard anyone complain about that. I don't take comic book fans seriously because they only seem to care whenever a change involves race. Changing literally everything about civil war except for captain america punching iron Man is fine and dandy but Valkyrie is played by a brown chick and all hell breaks loose. If that doesn't scream double standard then I don't know what does.

Do you really think people don't care about plot being changed?  I USED to care 20 years ago until I came to the realization that movie ADAPTIONS very very very nearly always stray from the source material in some way(s).

As for race the only time recently where it really bothered me was in the  Dark Tower.  I'm a big fan of early Stephen King (his work in the last 15 years not as much) and the Dark Tower series is one of my favorites. Roland being white was a plot point concerning Detta/Odetta and he was always depicted as a young Clint Eastwood looking mofo .  Now I have to admit I have not finished the movie but as far as I can tell they butchered the story so much that neither she nor Eddie are  even in it. OK I'm going to stop because I could be wrong and I shouldn't expect for them to squeeze 7 books into 1 movie and do it justice. I guess I just wanted to be honest that Idris Elba was such a far cry away from how I pictured Roland that regardless of how good an actor he is, him not being a "honky" meant parts of the story couldn't be there in the movie and that is a recent example that bothered me when I first heard about it.

On a different note my mother hates Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher because the character in the books is supposed to be a big dude and Tom is a shrimp ... so there is that.

I just think fans get upset when things are changed, not just genders and sexuality but plot and story line as well.  I've mostly come to peace with the fact that sometimes you just have to look at movies, books, and comics on their own and know that it will not be a beat for beat translation when they move from one medium to another. Although, if possible, I still believe that if given the choice one should watch the movie(s) first then read the books that way you have a better chance of enjoying both since the books are almost always better than the movies.

Yes, and they advertised it like that. Alternate history.

So is battlefield alternate history too? It's presented as accurate btw. Ty

Is it? Almost everything about the trailer I saw said otherwise.

Perhaps you never heard of coherence on a story.

I always prefer the original story.

But you are absolutely right, most of my friends hates all the changes they see (some could even accept that Saint Seiya movie for the sanctuary arc)... When I watch on a different media I always think as alternate storyline for me to not be totally upset with all the silly changes even more because some of then are needed when you cross media.

But as I said to the folk, if he goes to the dens where those fans fret over minimal details he will see a lot of complaining for all the changes not only gender/color/orientation. But SJW will SJW,

While there are many reasons for this, one of the most prominent is where the money lies.

If you think back to when franchises like Star Wars and Ghostbusters came out, the people who had money to blow were rural people. Which you can assume were mostly righties.
In today's world, the people with the money, and time to blow, are urban people. Which you can assume are mostly lefties.

While for the large majority of righties, race or gender don't matter, and simply being the best available in what you do matters most. While for many lefties, it seems that overall inclusivity matters more so than being great at specific tasks. This does explain to some extent why lefties tend to be more creative than righties in general, yet righties tend to be more efficient.

It's no coincidence that media back then favored the right, while it favors the left now. To make matters worse, the time and effort that rural people must invest to remain middle class, is much more than it ever has been before, and much more so than urban people. The rural people, even if they have the money, don't have the time for movies and tv like they used to, and tend to forget/avoid it completely since it can't fit their lifestyle, and they find other things to spend their money on.

There is also the fact that back then, men were the ones working for the most part, so pleasantries like media, were designed to give them relief from their work day. In today's world, there are many more woman working than ever, and the media is trying to cater to them as well. Add in the political divide, and it's not really a shock that certain media and certain companies/franchises are taking sides and sticking to them.

Luckily we human beings have been designed to cope with this type of thing. We have the ability to adapt in many ways, but if we can't, or simply don't want to, we also have the ability to be able to travel great distances to start anew and make things the way we want them to be. The same still applies today, minus the fact that all hospitable landmass has been found and claimed on this planet, so aside from "war", you have to pick a country with the rules and lifestyle that fit you the best, and go from there.

Life changes, and it isn't fair. Learning to let go and start over is part of process, unfortunately.
