Forums - Sony Discussion - A motion controller for the PS3 ?

Borkachev you don't have to buy a nunchuck, and the Wii can do position sensing in 3d space.

You need a nunchuk for for most games. And I have no problem with that (I think the nunchuk is probably the most comfortable "left half" of a controller I've used), but I think Sony/MS have a chance to improve on the concept, or at least to differentiate their product from Nintendo's.

As for the wiimote's 3D position sensing, it has a lot of problems. There's no way for the system to know where the remote is in absolute space, e.g. on the left or right side of your body. Even if it could work from an absolute starting point (like by pointing the remote at an LED cluster), it would quickly lose its place after turning away from the screen because the accelerometers are simply not accurate enough. And the remote's tilt sensing works pretty well on planes it can measure against the direction of gravity, but it's almost completely incapable of detecting rotation along the horizontal axis.

That's why a camera-based system, which could tell the precise location and orientation of the controller, would be an even bigger leap over the wiimote than the wiimote was over traditional controllers.

If they place their top devs on this that means you're best games now require you to buy a peripheral that might never be used. If they put their less talented devs than the whole thing is a waste of time.

If you ask me both ways are a waste of time, would you rather them have their first string team (like the God of War team) create a casual friendly game to attract an expanded audience (that might not work), or do you want God of War 3?

It doesn't have to be either/or. Done properly, support for the motion controls (and more importantly, the pointer function) could be cleanly added in on top of the existing games.

And don't make the mistake that motion controls = casual. There's huge potential within hardcore games as well.

i edited my post above to add the link to us patent website with details its long

tell me if you don't see it

EDIT: Here's the link I got the picture from that then gave link to patent info

http://ps3.qj.net/Sony-s-patenting-a-hand-held-computer-interactive-device-/pg/49/aid/89387

I read through some it seems it would use blue tooth but not sure.  a little bit down on the patent site it

says a down side is the user would have to take them on and off which could become frustrating.

btw patent filed dec. 2006

As my name suggests it took me awhile to getting around to posting...

I'll explain later...

^^^thanks chief

I honestly had know idea they patented this in 2006,,

but is that picture for that describtion?

I think they will utilize this with PSeye for position tracking,,,That will one up the nintendo's Wiimote

yeah

something just popped into my head

you could simulate an actual vader choke grip force move with those gloves.

not in the game but you playing the game. I mean the way your hand would look.

Neat. I hadn't seen that before. I'm not sure what kind of games it would be useful with, but maybe they're on to something.

I don't think it mentions anything about it in the patent filing, but a device like that could adjust the stiffness of each finger's movement on the fly to simulate the feeling of grabbing and holding things. If you picked up a rock, the fingers could lock at a certain point so it would feel like you were really holding it.

says a down side is the user would have to take them on and off which could become frustrating.

That quote is talking about conventional VR gloves. These things (basically open-backed gloves) are designed to avoid that problem.

Of course, most likely Sony was just covering its bases and this thing will never see the light of day.

Sixaxis is broken
Nobody use it because no game use it correctly, except for warhawk, Rachet and Uncharted.

I m not even sure all the PS3 users know the capcity of the controller since a lot of games dont use it.

 Fixed.

Uh...Motorstorm, flOw, Burnout, Folklore (they need a fishing game to use this motion)... Sixaxis is a motion controller. The topic title is outdated by 2 years. What you (might) mean is a pointing device, which is the only thing the Wiimote has that a mouse-less PS3 control doesn't have. I'd also like to point out that there have been very bad uses of the Wiimote and great ones, just like the Sixaxis. Just because people don't have to use it doesn't mean it's not a great experience and better in some cases. I am hearing great things about the motion control for Wipeout HD as wel.

Next there will be a thread making a rumour about a motion controller for the PC.

If the 360 gets a motion controller it will probably work on the PC too, as every other 360 controller.

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

Oops I created a thread just then claiming motion control for the PC. That is make a game within 6 months that works with the motion controller. A quick cash in.

So do PS2 and PS3 controllers, and the PC already has motion control.
