I honestly wouldn't want to live without my smartphone. I owned an iPhone 6 Plus before and I didn't really like the design of that line (6, 6s, 7, 8 are basically the same design). But I love my iPhone X to bits and I've owned it for more than four months now. My smartphone is my GPS, camera, video player, sometimes E-Book reader, phone, etc. all in one. Most phones these days easily have enough space for a truckload of stuff (my storage is only 50% full and I own the smallest 64gb version) and my old iPhone ran fine after three years of use. The phone was expensive but I pay only 7.99 monthly for internet and calls / SMS.
I understand smartphones can be annoying and stealing time, but really you just have to use them right: I only have a handful of apps installed and don't feel the need to instantly text or call back people. The battery lasts 3-4 days on a single charge for me and the iPhone X doesn't exactly have the best battery life on the market.

Smartphones don't actually steal time. They just fill the time with stuff the user wants to do and couldn't without it.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

My Xperia Z5 compact is more than 2.5 years old and the OS/GUI is as snappy as on its first day. It can even handle new games like PUBG mobile in medium settings (not my prefered genre on mobile, but I wanted to try out a demanding game).
I doubt that it will get too slow for the apps I frequently use (and touchscreen-friendly games I like) in the next 3 to 5 years. And it wasn't an expensive flagship model to begin with.
Should have gotten an iPhone. Eliminates most of your complaints there....

Yeah, but it adds the fact that he would then own an apple product. It's on OP if he really wants to go that far.

Couple that to the unservicability if Apple products and their quite bad construction quality of their phones and laptops in recent years. I would advice against buying iPhone's or anything Apple.
(And no, I'm not an Apple "hater", I was a Mac user since Mac OS 9)
They're not awful. Unless you want to go back to sending smoke signals to communicate. They have fast development-generation leap (1-2 years) but also the car/truck/motorcycle industry.

I've actually held my 5s for nearly 5 years. Than got finally sick of Apple and them F-ing around with their OS and itunes. So I got an S8. And they took off over $150 dollars. Because I held my old phone for so long.
