Forums - General Discussion - My new favorite show

Aggressive Retsuko (or Aggretsuko in the original Japanese) is my new favorite show. It's a Netflix series from the creators of Hello Kitty about an anthropomorphic, single, 25-year-old red panda named Retsuko who works in the accounting department of a Japanese trading corporation. Retsuko faces constant frustration every day from pushy superiors to annoying co-workers and lets out her emotions by going to a karaoke bar every night and singing death metal. It's a hilarious and thoroughly satisfying vindication of the working woman. Just wanted to promote it a little here 'cause I'm enjoying it a lot.

Here's a quick primer:

Around the Network

I know it's a great show, I spoke of it in the Netflix thread but nobody reacted to that comment, so I thought nobody cared about this show.

Great to see that at least one other person loves it too. I really hope this show is successful cause I'd love for Netflix to make a second season and more beyond that.

I also think this show is a satire on one of the lowest aspects of capitalism: Wage Slavery.

We live in times when people don't have jobs but it's jobs that have people and we end up having to do almost anything our bosses want lest we could lose our livelihood and it wears us down little by little until we burn out.

I think it's a commentary on a lot of things. Modern capitalism, the little sexist microaggressions you endure every day, all that sort of thing. Retsuko is a naturally giving person, but "people" (if you will) take advantage of her giving nature constantly and she gets progressively beaten down by it. She's gotta have her outlets because nobody's interested in solving any of these problems. Nobody listens to her. Nobody cares. I relate.

Whatever floats your boat. That kind of anime is not my thing.

I'm really impressed at how ballsy of a move that was by Netflix. I mean it's a workplace slice of life with a female protagonist, targeting young adult women who are likely the smallest demographics in anime.
It's also a Sanrio anime, the company behind Hello Kitty, which is the last company I would think of that would make an anime so mordant about the corporate world.
It's surprisingly good. I hope it will be renewed.
