GoW is an action RPG now. Feels more like Witcher, Dark Souls, Ryse, etc.

A hack n' slash is more like all the previous GoW games, DMC, Bayonetta and Dante's Interno. Essentially button mashing.

It's action rpg and hack and slash. Best of both worlds. Beautifully combined.

No, its not hack and slash anymore. It not fast paced button masher like the other games I mentioned.

Hack and slash is a subgenre and the new God of War is not in it.

I have to agree with Mr Puggsly on this, Kerotan. The 2018 GoW is in no way a hack and slash. It's in the same vein as Dark Souls/Nioh/witcher 3. You're punished for button mashing in action rpgs.

You saying there are no consequences for button-mashing in hack-and-slash?

That's not what I said, Kathy Newman.

So what did you say? Why mention "You're punished for button mashing in action rpgs"?

I think its more like how much button mashing are you doing. In a traditional hack and slash game you're mashing the attack buttons like an arcade game even if there is some strategy in the combat. Such as blocking, evade, deflect, large combos, etc.

The new God of War is more strategic, your actions are more deliberate. Button mashing in that game won't get you very far as it would in previous GoW games.

Not sure why this is an discussion, its almost like people want to argue the new GoW hasn't changed the formula significantly. Its a very different game now.

In the last third of the game (plus end game content) it is basically the exact same as the previous GOW games as far as hack and slash goes. For those that have played the first half and say they know enough to make a judgement, it changes.

If the first two-thirds of a game were a bejewelled clone, then for the last third it becomes a racing sim, what genre describes the game most?

I see... When I read "button mashing", I think back to fighting games wherein button mashing refers to mindlessly pressing buttons.

You could have figured it out what Puggsly described by thinking it out some instead of jumping to some extreme. What I wrote was reasonable and easy to understand.
