Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Labo is a huge ripoff and a waste of a great concept (so far)

Ok, then what? Now the kid has a Switch, cardboard with some mini games and parents who wont buy them regular games... How is Labo doing anything positive here?

Touche XD

I'm surprised that Labo the variety kit has gotten decent reviews for it on metacritic so far ...

Using the term "ripoff" says a lot more about the people who use that word, than the product they're referring to.

Ripoffs do not exist. There is only unrealistic expectations and fraud.

You completely missed the point.

Things like the Zapper, R.O.B. & Tetris didnt stop them from making games like Super Mario, Zelda or Metroid.

Things like Nintendogs, Brain Age & Wii Fit did not stop  them from making games like Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess & Metroid Prime 3.

Things like 1 2 Switch & Labo are not stopping them from making games like Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey or Xenoblade 2.

Diversity is important for any platform and every successful platform has had a mix of harcore, casual & casual-core software.

I feel like I have had this discussion one hundred times over the last decade. Seriously, it's deja vu over and over again. The difference between NES-Gamecube was that their gimmicks were in the background. They didn't try to stick them into the forefront. Labo has been pushed and pimped out over the internet and in the Switch "news" section nonstop. Seriously. That's all Nintendo has been fucking talking about.

Between the two of us, only one (me) has been there since the start. You weren't even in kindergarten when the N64 launched. That is not an insult, after all, we can't help when we were born but it does (and should) make you pause for a second to think about things from a different perspective. I was in third grade when I got my NES, which was... I think 1988. I saw all of this from the beginning and I can tell you that the Nintendo of that era was different... vastly so.

I think the Switch is as close to that spirit as we've gotten since the Wii came along and made our grandparents waggle around the living room like fucking idiots. It has the capability and the marketing to pull it off. But if Nintendo keeps up this Labo type stuff, that will all be for naught. The reason the Switch is selling so well is because of CORE games like BOTW. It's not because of cardboard and casuals.

NES came bundled with the Zapper and R.O.B., how can you say with a straight face that their novelty/gimmicks were in the background?

It came out when video games were pretty much banned by retailers in the US though. They had no choice but to mask the system as a toy. When that was over ROB got dropped quicker than a 2 dollar whore.

So parents are really willing to spend 380$ on a cardboard toy? I know kids can be noisy and you just want some peace for once, but for Christ sake.

You can say that about any game though. Kids bought a GC, got Resident Evil 4 and then moved on to Mario and Zelda. Theres no way to disprove that either. Do Nintendo really need to try and get the parents who don't care for video games to buy their console? Is that really a market worth going after when you have millions of gamers fucking crying when you reveal the new Smash Bros? How about you try and go after people who knows and loves video games instead of these potential buyers?

Maybe parents already have a Switch for themselves but don't want to give their children videogames so early and Labo seems a good solution to them. Maybe they are rich and 400 dollars is nothing to them. Maybe Nintendo is overconfident... I DON'T KNOW.

Em... I'm pretty sure not many kids started with RE 4. And if they did, they had terrible parents xD

Because we (the longtime fans) will not buy Nintendo forever. It's all about the children for Nintendo. They grow with their brands, they become attached to them and they continue to buy them over the years. But one day, they become old and they don't have interest in videogames anymore, or at the very least, the interest decrease drammatically. So... they need to keep their core fans happy for as long as they can, and at the same time, continue to attract kids to continue the cycle. And since kids nowadays are exposed to so many different products... a new videogame of their most famous character may not be enough. They need to keep creating new things to attract kids. Labo is the result. If it works or not... I really don't know. We'll see...

Sony is doing fine without cheap cardboard... Quality games will make people buy your system. If Nintendo really need an audience that bad, then maybe their franchises aren't as great as we might think.

Who cares? Thats not what is being discussed, he said their gimmicks were in the background.

Being bundled and a huge focus in advertisements is the exact opposite of being in the background.

and apparently didnt sell well...

The know says it "flopped" and it was a "failure", selling less than 30% of its shipments in japan.

(they shipped 90k vararity kit + 29k robo kit)

Thats like a total of 119k units shipped in japan, and less than 30% means less than 35,700 units sold of it there.
Origami is probably bigger in japan than anywhere else in the world.... so Im not expecting insane sales anywhere else for it.

Also claim that the Labo software didnt move any switch units, switch sales where lower that week than prior/expected.

*** edit:
My opinion was always that it looked like cheesy shovelware level software..... Not sure why people where so hyped up on this.

Ok, well it didn't work that time anyway. Super Mario Bros. is what sold the console pretty much. The NES wasn't a success when ROB was sold with it. But if you want to use that as whatever you are arguing, then sure.

That's because Sony is not interested in kids. They have diferent targets and therefore, different strategies.

Another moot point, Sony and Nintendo have completely different philosophies when it comes to how they market their brands. And to keep bringing up cardboard like that's all Nintendo has going for them is ridiculous hyperbole.
