Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo removes DKC Tropical Freeze from Wii U eshop

I was contemplating double dipping once the price of the Switch version comes down, but charging more on Switch then it ever cost on WiiU already was very offputting and now this.

They are really screwing over the few loyal people that acually bought into the WiiU. No, it wont affect many, but it's still sort of underhanded and scummy.

I know other publishers have usually given a notice or announcement before taking any of their games down so I think it would've been nice if Nintendo did the same.

it is entirely possible that this was an error. my own personal guess is that since the Switch is very young and both it and the Wii U use the eShop, they likely run on the same servers. so my theory is when the Switch version was released on the eShop, it updated the entire listing for the game to Switch only, meaning it would not show up on the Wii U eShop.

I hope this was a mistake, otherwise this is some shady shit Nintendo.

This probably affected 50 people max. If you didn’t buy the game within its first four years, you weren’t going to get it on a dead console. And if you were just buying it at a discounted price just to spite the developers for porting, maybe you should be worried more about your own scruples instead of Nintendo’s.

It doesn't matter. There is no reason to stop offering digital versions of a game. The digital shelf space is unlimited.

Non-switch versions are filtered out in the Switch eShop anyways and non-WiiU versions are filtered out in the WiiU eShop, so there is no danger of confusion or oversaturation. In the browser eShop you can also easily filter by system.

They also have to keep the data available for owners of that digital version to redownload, so even the (laughable) costs for "wasting" 6.6 GB precious space wouldn't be an argument.

So why not keep these versions on the digital shelf?

Is the OP going to update the thread title that the removal was temporary and that the game is back on the Wii U eShop already? Maybe it was intentional, and they walked it back after it was noticed. Or maybe it was a complete and total accident that was rectified just as quickly. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the correct one.

In the browser-based US eShop there is still no "buy digital" button for that game. Are you sure it is back on the Wii U eShop in the US region?

I'm at work, so I can't check my Wii U to personally verify.  I was going by what I was seeing others reporting online.

It was gone yesterday, it has since been put back up this morning. I've already informed RMC. It's back up on the US eShop as well. Maybe they made a mistake or maybe they figured the bad publicity wasn't worth it ahead of the Switch version's release.

But that source lives in Europe and doesn't have access to the US region in the Wii U eShop:

So how can he verify that the digital purchase returned? He can only check the browser based eShop for the US region... and there is still no purchase button for the Wii U version.

Good, fuck the Wii U.
