Forums - Gaming Discussion - Hard evidence that digital distribution is slowly taking over for physical copies.

Let me add a few things the OP:

1) Keep in mind that the ratio of digital/physical only includes games that are available in both formats. Therefore, digital-only games like Hellblade, Sonic Mania, The Witness, aren't included.

2) I never actually said physical games will completely die. I used the word "obsolete". They will still be a small niche, like music vinyls.

@ bold

Can you point me to where it actually says this?

Actually I looked it up. You are wrong. Via the report:

"Game Software includes physical software sales and digital software sales (including full-games and add-on content)."

"Full game software digital download ratio is calculated by the following formula: Full game software units sold via digital transactions/Full game software units sold via both physical and digital transactions"

So digital only games do calculate into their formula to figure out the ratio. The only stipulation is that it is a "full" game, which basically just means it doesn't count DLC for the ratio.

I forgot to mention this at the start, that "Full Game" is available physically and digitally, while "PSN Game" is only available digitally.

And in the report, they don't forget to mention "full game" over and over again.

edit: sorry for the big margin. when I go to edit the post, the margin disappears.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Not entirely true, some games that are labelled "PSN Game" have a physical release, I know for sure that Pure Pool does.

That means that select physical games aren't included either then. Only "full games" are located in that ratio.

Well, those are games that I assume were originally digital only before getting a physical release. In any case, I'm still 100% physical myself, and to be honest if future consoles become digital-only I probably won't buy them until they can be exploited so I can pirate the games, since I don't want to pay money for digital copies.

Very true. There's also cases where some regions only get a digital release, but others get a physical one. Just going by the first page of PSN games, I believe Little Witch Academia is only getting a digital release in the states, where it's both in Japan. Owlboy is also listed as PSN game, but it also has a physical release.

I'm pretty sure Sony is counting any and all full game releases in their ratio.

Just going by the first page of PSN games, I believe Little Miss Academia is only getting a digital release in the states, where it's both in Japan. Owlboy is also listed as PSN game, but it also has a physical release.

What the fuck, Little Witch Academia isn't getting a physical release here? That sucks.

And still playing games there since we're talking about 5 Stars prison ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I am so adamant on physical copies that I don't buy DLC, games that are digital-only, etc. The only exceptions are when I get those gift cards as a present, since I can't really use them for anything else
