Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Switch killer app that nobody ever mentions

I'd be in for a 2D Mario. I honestly only like Sunshine, Galaxy and Odyssey, from the 3D mario games.

Well NSMBU definitely wasn't system seller for Wii U, I think Nintendo pushed NSMB series too much, but for instance Mario Maker 2 would be system seller definatly.

The game didn't sell systems because Nintendo treated 2D Mario like trash. Despite the series selling insane numbers on Wii and DS, Nintendo didn't put any care into the 3DS and Wii U games, basically copy-pasting the formula that was established with New Super Mario Bros. on the DS. And quickly after the release of the Wii U game, they released Mario 3D World and pushed that with huge amounts of marketing. Nintendo needs to put the care and production values of 3D Mario into the 2D games and the series will sell like sliced bread again. 2D Mario (if done right) is still Nintendo's biggest and most iconic franchise - but people won't put up with sub-par quality and the same recycled formula over and over again.

Well Wii U version looked like Wii version just in HD, and I actually think that game is one of reasons why people thought that Wii U is some kind of addon for Wii. Nintendo was right to push Mario 3D World but unfortunely game come out on Wii U when console was already considered for fail in time when PS4/XB1 were launched. If Nintendo had Mario 3D World instead NSMBU for launch of Wii U, things could be difrent for Wii U. Nintendo needs to stop releasing NSMB series, they released too much NSMB games and they are all too similar, they need new kind of 2D Mario or Mario Maker.

I'd love to see new Mario Maker, which would include all standard 2D maps across all generations and new, future maps as DLCs. One Mario game to rule them all.

Let's be clear the 2D Mario series and Mario Maker are entirely different series of games. No doubt they will release a new 2D Mario on the Switch and either a port of Mario Maker or Mario Maker 2. These are not the same game and one will never replace the other. 2D Mario is one of Nintendo's biggest series, and Mario Maker is a cool new creative series added to the Mario franchise. They exist entirely separately.

And yeah it is time to probably start a new 2D Mario series now that we've had what like 4 or more games of the New SMB series.

I'll absolutely be buying 2D Mario and Mario Maker (even just a port) whenever they come out.

NSMBU would have done tons better if NSMB2 hadn't released a few months before.

I have always enjoyed 2d mario platforming.  However, I will agree with several others that they pushed the "new" smb thing down everyone's throat to the point where I think it did get stale.  I bought them all, and enjoyed them at the time....but I'm not ready for another one at this point.  I'm ready to try out other 2d platformers like rayman and dkcountry, which would be a new experience for me.

Hopefully they don't continue the NSMB series, it's become so sickeningly stale, lazy, and uninspired.

2D Mario deserves a reboot on par with the quality of Odyssey. Unfortunately I don't think that's likely to happen as Nintendo will probably figure why bother when people will keep buying the same recycled mush.

@bold: I firmly believe so too. There's no comparing the hit and miss nature of Mario Maker with the well thought out level designs and cohesion of the Nintendo developed 2D Marios.

Yeah, when researching for this topic, I was surprised at how close together both titles were. That certainly didn't help.

Signature goes here!

I completely agree. And honestly, I think its rather easy to reinvent it.You just have to merge the traditional Mario 2D games with the Mario Maker aspect into one single package and make that game the new ongoing structure for the "genre".In that, you innovate the way the first Mario Maker did, which you could create your own courses anyway you like, and you would add to it a very strong single player campaing which is built from the ground up, with a new artstyle, new machanics, or even a new gameplay idea altogether, and add that artstyle/gameplay style to the online part of it(the Mario Maker part)

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Killer app? This is one of those cases of people throwing around terms FAR too readily; like calling a game a “sleeper hit” when it hasn’t even reached 150,000 units, or a AAA title when it’s a lower fidelity title that obviously had a low budget and small dev team.

Killer apps are software that can single-handedly move MILLIONS of pieces of hardware by themselves - like Wii Sports, Super Mario Bros, and Breath of the Wild to a lesser extent - particularly in the early stages of hardware release, but on occasion later stages - such was the case with Pokemon on Gameboy.

NSMB Switch isn’t going to do that.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
