Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Switch killer app that nobody ever mentions

Well NSMBU definitely wasn't system seller for Wii U, I think Nintendo pushed NSMB series too much, but for instance Mario Maker 2 would be system seller definatly.

My hunch has been that the next 2D Mario will be the big "system seller" holiday title for Nov/Dec 2019. I expect Smash (obviously), Pokemon, and Animal Crossing will have already come out before then, either later this year or first half of next year.

I also expect they will follow some of the approaches in Mario Odyssey's 2D sections to change it up and not have it be NSMB Switch.

Takashi Tezuka and Miyamoto expressed wanting to surpass and exceed the New Super Mario Bros. series so I think we'll get a new era of 2D Mario games for sure. Just give us Mario Maker 2 before that happens Nintendo!

I figured the biggest reason people leave out a 2D Mario when they mention future 1st party titles is the series becoming stale, which I can understand. While SMBU was fun it wasn't much different from the 1st, and I think it was wearing itself out with SMB2 on the 3DS.

Personally, I'd like to see another 2D Mario on the Switch, and I'm certain we'll see one at some point. I just hope they do shake up the formula though in some sort of way. I always wished they would replace the toads with Wario and Waluigi. I think that's be cool...

I've never understood the appeal of 2D Mario. It's like, why would you want that when 3D Mario exists?

If you try playing one of the NSMB games with 3 other friends, it could be a lot of fun. I used to invite friends to play on weekends, and each time it was just chaotic fun trying to pass stages and people screaming from dying or falling into pits xD

Oh yeah obviously 2D Mario will be a huge system seller on the Switch. They do need to do something to breathe some fresh air into it though. But I fully expect Switch's 2D Mario to sell 20+ million. Mario Maker is not at all the same thing as 2D Mario, they are two entirely different games. I'm sure we'll see either a port of Mario Maker on the Switch or a Mario Maker 2.

It's the killer app that goes hand in hand with a left Joy-Con that has a d-pad. I also like the idea of XL Joy-Cons with bigger sticks and buttons, and better ergonomy in portable mode.

Xbox controllers have never had anything close to resembling decent D-Pads, yet people still bought 2D platformers like Rayman and Sonic for those consoles. Not as much as on other platforms, but not that far behind PlayStation equivalents considering relative platform sales. Assuming that Switch owners are also barbarians, they'll eat up a 2D Mario sans D-Pad.

Love and tolerate.

I have somewhat given up on 2D Mario, because I feel Nintendo has given up on 2D Mario. Neither the 2D Mario for the 3DS or the one for the Wii U were particularly that good. And then we get Mario Maker, which was a really fun game, but it also makes it seem like Nintendo doesn't want to do 2D Mario anymore, so they just let the players make the levels now.

Having said all that, I really hope Nintendo proves me wrong. I really enjoy a good 2D Mario when they actually make one. And on top of that a good 2D Mario is even more of a killer app than a good Pokemon game. But for the last couple of 2D Marios, I think Nintendo is really phoning it in.

As it turned out, no game was a system seller for Wii U. That's why putting blame on NSMBU was and is misplaced.

Maybe you are right, but Mario Maker instead game that looked like NSMB Wii game just in HD would probably done more.

The game didn't sell systems because Nintendo treated 2D Mario like trash. Despite the series selling insane numbers on Wii and DS, Nintendo didn't put any care into the 3DS and Wii U games, basically copy-pasting the formula that was established with New Super Mario Bros. on the DS. And quickly after the release of the Wii U game, they released Mario 3D World and pushed that with huge amounts of marketing. Nintendo needs to put the care and production values of 3D Mario into the 2D games and the series will sell like sliced bread again. 2D Mario (if done right) is still Nintendo's biggest and most iconic franchise - but people won't put up with sub-par quality and the same recycled formula over and over again.
