Really cool it's going to eclipse the PS1 sales but I have to admit I was hoping it had a chance at beating the PS2.

FY 2013 - 7.5M
FY 2014 - 14.8M (22.3M Total)
FY 2015 - 17.7M (40M Total)
FY 2016 - 20M (60M Total)
FY 2017 - 19M (79M Total)

------------ guessing below:

FY 2018 - 18M (97M Total)
FY 2019 - 16M (113M Total)
FY 2020 - 12M (125M Total)  (PS5 has now launched and PS4 sales slow)

Then maybe over the next 4 years it does another 10m?
Total sales of PS4 ends up around ~134m or so.

So I dont think it ll beat the PS2 in total sales.... However I can see it going over 130m, which isnt a bad number at all.

At the end of 2018, PS4 will be nov and dec 2013 plus 5 years. If estimates are correct (and they seem low) It will sell 96 million consoles. (leaving PS3 and XBOX 360 totals far behind)

PS1 sold 82,3 in the same period.

PS2 sold 87,5 in the same period.

Wii sold 95,85 in the same period. (And 99,9 the following year, it just dropped sales like a piano)

So , if everything is as it looks, PS4 will be the fastest selling console for a 5 year period. (plus nov and dec of the year before).

PD:

I think It´s hard for PS4 to sell more than PS2. PS2 was followed by a really expensive 600 USS PS3, and many bought a cheap PS2.  PS2 DVD had wider use than Blue Ray. And 2008 stock crisis made people skip on buying expensive stuff.  Also XBOX and Gamecube didn´t sell well. A lot of things have to happen in order to keep PS4 sales going like PS2 did after PS5 launches, but who knows...

Edit; At the end of 2018, PS4 will be nov and dec 2013 plus 5 years. If estimates are correct (and they seem low) It will sell 95 million consoles (79+16). (leaving PS3 and XBOX 360 totals far behind).

So it will be neck to neck with Wii 5th year after lauch holidays and if they up their forecast, then will be the fastest selling console for the period. Nice race at year´s end.

It will be upped to at least 17m. They've done it every year why would it change now. This is just humbled Sony in full swing.

PS4 could have sold more if the Pro wasn't such a half hearted attempt at a mid gen upgrade. The difference in Far Cry 5 is staggering, 1620p on PS4 Pro and 4K on One X and its the same for many multiplatform games. There is no freesync and no backwards compatibility and the Switch has captured public attention. They have to do more if they want to keep the price at $300 and $400 but if they do a price cut it could sell amazingly.

Pro wasn't a half hearted attempt. It was a smart way of going about it so it's cost wasn't crazy. They basically just doubled up on the GPU they were already buying from AMD, with a few slight improvements, and over clocked everything. It's why it's $399 and not $499. It'll also allow them to earn more profit when they do cut the price. In the end, what truly matters, is the Pro is going to easily outsell the X. And when the PS5 comes out, they are both going to look weak in comparison.

The Pro was called a 4K console but it doesn't have any 4K game that's not a sports game and 7th gen games. The difference between PS4 and Pro's GPU is not enough for what it was supposed to offer and CPU is a small increase in frequency. The memory bandwidth is the same and the RAM is the same. Its why  higher resolution games have the same textures as PS4 but on One X they have 4K textures. Waiting for 1 year at $400 would have made a better console.

You should see the PR side as well. The Pro didn't deliver what it promised and has a bad image but One X has a positive image. Its why there is any talk of One X outselling PS4 Pro at all and if PS4 Pro had the power of the X it would have sold more at $500. Its the reason I haven't bought a Pro, though I would like to play Infamous: Second Son and God of War at 60fps. Sony failed to support it themselves, no reason why God of War 3 Remastered doesn't run at 4K60fps on PS4 Pro and Driveclub didn't get Pro support.

Wow. I never realized how badly Wii fell off at the end. Does that make it a fad? What was the final years like for software sales on Wii? I bet my sig that PS4 will beat out Wii SW considerably, even if a PS5 is out by 2019. I just can't see PS4 sales dropping before 2019-2020/whenever the next gen PS5 gets into full swing.

Sony never promised that all games would run at 4K on the Pro. Hell, they showed off checkerboard rendering at the reveal. Like I said, there's a reason Sony is selling at $399 and making a profit, while MS sold at $499 and supposedly sold at a loss. The Pro is supposed to just be a mid-gen upgrade, not a leap in a gen. MS, on the other hand, had nothing they could do but push for a more powerful machine. They sure as hell couldn't have released something on par with the Pro. But, even with that power, it still can't run all games at 4K, so maybe it was half-hearted, too?

Of course, there are two things that make your point moot. One, that power isn't helping MS that much. Sure, it's up YOY for several months, at least for NPD. However, that's compared to last year, where it was down YOY from 2016. And most of the push is coming from a S that needs to be $70+ cheaper than the PS4 to push those numbers. And two, the PS5 is going to be here in 1 1/2 - 2 years to put both of them to shame. At which point, crossgen games will probably drop below 4K on X even more. Why was it so half-hearted?

I am disappointed that they’re not planning on dropping the price this year.

Calm down. This could be good. This indicate that we will not have a PS5 next year. At least i imagine this is a desire of the majority of PS4 owners.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

For the people saying this means no price cut this year, thats not necessarily true, consoles can still decline in a year that has a price cut.

PS2 had price cuts in 2003 & 2004 yet shipmenys dropped in those years.

Wii had its first price cut in 2009, shipments dropped that year.

Good sales last year though the forecast for this year isnt great. But with some great games coming, hopefully we see boosts in hardware.

Whats the surplus from the last FY?

Cause whatever that surplus is plus what they plan on shipping this year can paint a better picture of how much they really plan on selling.

At the end of Dec it was 73.6 million sold and 76.5 million shipped so a difference of 2.9 million.

They shipped 2.5 million last quarter but according to NPD/Media Create, US+Japan alone sold ~1.7 million and since Europe is their strongest region and factoring in RoTW than sales should be over 3 million for the quarter.

Its highly likely they sold more than they shipped last quarter to get rid of excess stock.

Thanks for this, sorry about being late... just got back from work.

So yh, So if we put RoTW sales at 3M of a cummulative shipment of 5.4M. That means at the end of FY2017 there are 2.4M PS4s left unsold.

Then we add the planned 16M intended shipment for FY2018 and that gives us around 18.4M consoles in circulation.

Not as bad as it looked originally, but also a big indication that they are not gong to be as aggressive on the pricing as most of us would have hoped.
