Splatoon was a cool and fresh (I'll see myself out) new IP, but it wasn't really ambitious or epic in the way that Breath of the Wild is.

I think it was fairly ambitious, taking on a genre they had only dabbed in a little.

It was daring, but I was talking more in terms of scope and production value.

Not bad, but when counting sales inflation of games compared to the 90's its really closer to being 5 million to OOT's 7.6. Take the best selling game of this gen and compare it to the best selling game of the ps/n64 gen to find the difference then divide BOTW numbers with that difference to get pre inflation sales numbers. Decent but not ground breaking

I'm not sure that's how it works.

It's not like with money, and there already were 10m, 20m, 30m and even a 40m seller in the generations beforehand. In fact, I'd say software sales of the top 5th and 6th gen games are a bit disappointing compared to those of the gens before and after those, but that's a different story altogether.

Notice that it's barely been a year - both the franchise, and that it's a launch title would lead us to believe that the game should easily sell another 50% over what it's currently at.

Bet with PeH:

I win if Arms sells over 700 000 units worldwide by the end of 2017.

Bet with WagnerPaiva:

I win if Emmanuel Macron wins the french presidential election May 7th 2017.

Does that make The Legend of Zelda (NES) the king then?

Ocarina of Time is still the largest overall - but it has seen release across four platforms - and one of those is as part of a compilation with the Master Quest included, another is a heavily marketed remake.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Not even close to being one of my favourites, but I am super happy for the title and recognize that this is what the series needed!

Breath of the Wild is the game I have wanted to play ever since I heard about “Zelda 64” back in the mid 1990s. Ocarina if Time turned out great, but failed to meet the expectations I had (which were realistically unreasonable at the time). Breath of the Wild is easily one of my favourite games of all time, my favourite Zelda, and the first worthy Zelda sequel since the N64 - I am not saying WW, TO, and SS were terrible games, but they were definitely well below the bar.

It is definitely the best Zelda game. I hope it outsells all the rest, so that Nintendo will get the picture and make another one like it.

Agreed, also so that Nintendo gets the message that when they invest in making epic ambitious games it pays off. They played it way too safe from 2012-2016, nearly nothing they released during that time had any real ambition.

I believe for the Wii U both BotW and XenoX were their most ambitious projects. Both are my fav Wii U games alongside Splatoon.

In my case, BotW overworld is how I expected TP's world to be.
