We'll see...

There is zero sense to release another completely different platform from Switch along side Switch, because Switch is also handheld in same time, and one of biggest advantage of Switch for Nintendo is that they are now working on games for just one platform. In some point Nintendo will just release Switch Mini/Pocket that will have more affordable price point.

Problem with this would be that the Joycons would become even smaller, and they are too small already for people without small hands. They could be fixed to that Switch mini - but wouldn't that defeat the Switching mechanic?

Hence why I think they will bring one handheld with fixed Joycons- which can be switched into a Smartphone. A smaller Switch would be in that territory anyway sizewise, so why not try and fuse the best of both worlds together? Nintendo could change a portion of the eShop into an appstore (because no android, hence no app store) to bring productivity apps as well as some smartphone games and make another Smartphone unnecessary if you have that kind of Switch phone = Multimillion seller guaranteed.

Full translated breifing

thx, i'll have a look at it. First of course, the Switch:

It shows the sell-through of Kirby Star Allies is just above 1M (first diagram on 2nd page) after 5 weeks.

Also Bayonetta 2. It's tracking almost 100k in front of the Wii U version after 9 weeks at ~380k (sold through).

Digital sales have almost doubled (in monetary value, not necessary volume) compared to last year, now at 60.4 billion Yen for the financial year.

Also interesting is that the number of active Splatoon 2 players in Japan is still growing despite it's release being 9 month in the past.

Over 600 games in the eShop already??? It includes regional exclusives but still, that's a huge amount of games after just 13 months!

Stardew Valley close to be a million seller on Switch! And Overcooked over 500k!

Now for 3DS News on this briefing:

Over 1000 games available for the 3DS. That really shows how huge the Switch library already is, having already more than half of what the 3DS has.

Nintendo planning continuing support for the 3DS after 2018. Not sure about 2019 though considering it's sales.

Now for the Smart devices:

Animal Crossing Pocket Camp has about an 80% female userbase, mostly adult women.

Super Mario Run still selling steadily

Fire Emblem Heroes now has a mostly non-Japanese userbase, it being released in south-east asia probably also helped to this shift.

New game Dragalia Lost coming in Summer in cooperation with Cygames (an RPG by the looks of it). It  does apparently have a website already, albeit in Japanese as the game will release in the west at a later date only.

Mario Kart Tour coming during this fiscal year worldwide to smart devices.

I was also thinking about fixed controls, if you want Switching mehanic than go buy regular Switch, point of Mini/Pocket version is to have smaller or whats more important lower price point Switch just for handheld play.

I dont think Nintendo would release smartphone, even Switch is totally gaming device currently dont offer any other service.

The difference here is, Xenoblade is Monolith's main series. That has always been their jam, that's what they are good at.

The only reason Pikmin gets sequels is because that franchise is Shigeru Miyomoto's baby.

I'm not suggesting ARMS was a failure. Infact, I admit that it did quite well for what it was. It probably earned more profit's than Xenoblade 2, as you suggested. However, if you're Nintendo, do you send the Kosuke Yabuki team to.....

a) Make Mariokart 9. A game that is basically guaranteed to sell at least 10 million units on Switch (probably much more than that)

b) sequel to ARMS, something that may not even hit 2 million (first game only sold as well as it did because next to nothing on the switch when the game launched. Now, that advantage will also be gone).

You could put another EPD team on it, sure. But what team? Take the koizumi team off 3D Mario? Take the Aonuma team off Zelda? Take Nogami team off Splatoon? Heck no, to all of these. The only one that would do it is 1,2 Switch/Labo team.

Funny you said the 1-2 Switch/Labo team. Tsubasa Sakaguchi, the director of Labo, was the director of the original Splatoon.

https://labo.nintendo.com/developer-interview/

If they want, the directors and programmers can be flexible and do whatever they feel like doing. And Sakaguchi wanted to go outside of conventional game development.

Sakaguchi is quickly becoming one of my favourite directors at Nintendo and I think he'll be one to watch in the future.

Anyways, great number all around. I expected the Switch to have fallen under Ps4 right now launch aligned, but it's actually on par. It probably wont peak early either, certainly not in first year like 3DS did. We will see if it will have more stying power than the Wii, but considering the kind of machine it is, I think it will be just fine.

I find it amusing everyone is so sure Nintendo will eventually release a Switch-less, Switch. Not saying they won't but I dont think a new dedicated, budget friendly handheld is out of the question. But like I said in my previous post, we'll see.

Ya who knows what kind of revisions they will come up with but i think we can all agree plently of revisions will happen.

1996-GB Pocket

1998-GBC

2001-GBA

2003-GBA SP

2004-DS

2005-GBA Micro

2006-DS Lite

2008-DSi

2009-DSi XL

2011-3DS

2012-3DS XL

2013-2DS

2015-New 3DS XL

2017-New 2DS XL

Since 1996 they have only gone 8 years without some sort of new handheld model.

We're really thinking that we'll get a Mario Kart 9 on Switch???
I'm the only one whose skeptical of the idea???
Why fix what isn't broken???
No???

Have a nice day...

Because if they don't make Mario Kart 9 on Switch, then there would be a 6+ year gap between Mario Kart releases, and 9+ years between brand new versions. This would be utterly ridiculous considering that Mario Kart is Nintendo's most popular franchise as of right now. It's the top game on both 3DS and Wii U, and it's number 2 on Switch despite just being a port of the Wii U version. We haven't gone three years without a Mario Kart game being released since 2002.
