Forums - General Discussion - What should I bring to 'Nam

I'm going to 'Nam in the foreseeable future to talk to students at a college and meet children affected by diseases. I want to bring some joy and something they have never seen before. Right now I am bringing 20 boxes of tictacs because they are easy to carry. Any other suggestions?

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Tylenol or some form of medicine. I know people that bring that to give out when going to South East Asia.

Are you Doctor ?

That's something I definitely wouldn't do.

Carrying big amounts of medicine will get you in serious trouble with the local customs and maybe even the police.

You'd need to do some serious research prior to that to chek if they are legal and how much you can carry or if you need to declare them.

I'll tell you what not to bring to Vietnam. Don't bring any expensive electronics or jewelry, especially if you stay in a city. And don't bring your porn collection with you. Porn is illegal in 'nam and they're very strict about it, to the point where my friend had its unlabeled DVDs checked at the airport.

Seriously though...tictacs...huh? It's not North Korea.

What are they going to play it on, the Commador 64?

That's something you're allowed to do.

I've witness this done countless times or else I wouldn't have suggested it.  My friend's mom brought a suitcase full of Tylenol down there and she had no problem passing through.  Unless it's a ton of liquid meds or unlabeled meds, but almost anything retail package no matter the amount you want to bring is acceptable.

If you are going to the more rural areas of Vietnam to see the kids, bring American Chocolate, AKA, Hershey bars. Sweetened milk chocolate is still pretty rare in rural areas throughout most of Asia.
