Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wolfenstein II for Nintendo Switch to launch June 29.

Happy it’s finally got a release date. I had planned to get this game on switch but I can currently pick up the ps4 version for around half the price. Common complaint and I hate to be that guy but it is kind of annoying if you happen to own other consoles... Hard to justify even though it’d be admittedly kind of cool to have the game on a portable device. Maybe I’ll hold off until I need a decent travel game.

Sign me up! Just hope the cutscenes don't run on for too long.

Listening to someone yammer on and on can really kill the fun for me.

The game requiring additional downloading makes this game feel quite unappealing to me, although I'm not really interested in this game to begin with.

I was annoyed when I first read that too, but given the game's 13GB and presumably comes on a 8GB cart, we should be looking at a 5GB download, which is pretty small by today's standards. Yeah, it'd be nice if they just packed it all into a 16GB cart, but unless your Switch's memory is already full to bursting, it shouldn't pose a problem.

I'm just not really a fan of the whole splitting the game into parts, as I feel I don't really have the full game in the cart, and I'm not happy with the idea that I'd have to compensate for part of the game so that publishers can save some costs.

Oh I agree, it's a shitty anti-consumer practice that no respectable dev should stoop to. But as long as the download isn't huge, I'd rather put up with the mild inconvenience than miss out on playing Wolfenstein altogether.

The physical version requires a download.

Anyone know how big it is and If we should be outraged or not?

Apparently the PS4/XB1 versions are ~44 GB.
Switch version is ~14 GB (not sure what compression / lower quality textures / sound&picture quality was lost to allow this).

So it depends on what size cartidge they ship it on.
But yeah Most likely they shipped it on a 8GB one and you ll have to download like ~6GB.

Seems like alot of games, are shipping for the Switch, with half the game on the cartidge, and you needing to download the other half.

Cutting texture quality is a matter of simply dropping the largest mipmaps. It's a cheap and simple solution of having too much data to fit on the cart. Cut from 4K x 4K to 1024 x 1024 is a 16 x savings in texture data. It won't look too terrible on the Switch's 720p screen. That said, it's built on id tech 6, which supports virtual texturing like many games do now (it's standard under later DX11 revisions and is standard under DX12/Vulkan/OpenGL 4.3 with an extension (GL_ARB_sparse_texture) so it's more like 128K x 128K to 64K x 64K, because the entire level is textured with a single massive texture.

Yeah, that is true. It's better than nothing. I just hope this problem eventually goes away in hopes of the carts being cheaper to make, or something like that.

I agree. The ball's in Nintendo's court, though. They specced the console to use carts. It's something that end users have to care about. It's going to be more expensive than a PS4/XB1 game (not including PC; different market, different rules) until 64 GB carts come out. The 32 and 16 GB carts are going to move down in price. I think releasing half a game on cart and forcing the user to download the rest of the game is a shameful practice, but games may not come out otherwise. Last I heard, it was about $20 for a licensed 32 GB Switch cart vs just $12 for a licensed 50 GB BD. Companies live within those kinds of margins. Keep in mind, publishers pay upfront for production and licensing of carts, so that's 2 million for 100,000 carts. If they only sell 50K, they're out 1 million bucks. It's not just development that's expensive. Publishing is too. Come to think of it, Crysis for Wii U likely got canned at the last minute due to this.

Yeah, it's a small evil that the base will have to accept for now if they want the games at all, and Nintendo is partially at fault for going with carts instead of CDs, but I'm fine with it if it was necessary to make the Switch's main gimmick possible.

Yeah, it was a necessary evil to get it to work at all. CD/DVD/BD are all rotating media. A no-go in a portable console. I also accept that Switch owners need to buy MicroSD cards to download some of the bigger AAA titles. The only thing I can complain about on the Switch is that Nintendo offered 32 GB of storage just like the Wii U. In an era of 50+ GB games, Nintendo offers about half the space needed to store 1 AAA game. Yikes.

Yeah, that small storage space is awful. With how big games are nowadays, it wasn't a friendly move for Nintendo to make.
