Forums - Gaming Discussion - GoW (PS4) versus Zelda:BOTW

I am seeing people argue already about GOTG and all of that between these 2 games and I think it is impossible to tell.

I am a lifelong Zelda fan, and BoTW blew me away.

I have never played a God of War game before and I am currently being blown away by it.

But comparisons between the 2 wont really go anywhere. They are different.

Zelda was a pure open would romp. I could go anywhere I could see I could use anything I find to craft something and I could do something with almost everything in the environment.

GoW has some open world aspects to it, but at its core it is a story driven game. God of War eliminates the most annoying aspects of BOTW while not having 1 one thing that made BoTW groundbreaking. Zelda had a decent story, solid gameplay mechanics, but certain things were extremely unbalance or even broken. Food for one takes any challenge out of the game even on master mode. Weapon durability is a weak concept, it simply is not fun avoiding fights for the simple reason you don't want your weapons to break, the master sword alleviates this a bit, but still it is a constant drag. This to me is a major negative, maybe the only negative for Zelda.

GoW lacks the pure freedom of Zelda, but it also creates solutions to Zeldas main issues. Your Weapon does not have durability, and arrows are infinity (on a micro CD).

So one has a massive world where you can go anywhere and do almost anything (Zelda), and the other is restricted but has better balance and deeper combat. So basically

Zelda has an advantage-

Bigger world

More to do

Better puzzles and more of them (by a long shot)

God of War has an advantages-

Much better graphics

Better and deeper combat

Better story and story telling

Balance. (Zelda has this weird point in the game that it goes from being kinda hard to easymode, like really fast).

So as you can see each game has advantages, and they are advantages in huge areas. So depending on what someone is looking for in a game will make them lean one way or the other.

I am not done with GoW at this point and I really cant say which way I would lean. If GoW finishes really strong I will probably go that way, but many games are stronger early and weak late so if that is the case I would go with Zelda.

Zelda had a decent..story? I think you're giving it to much credit in that department man.

I don't think they're really comparable. better comparisons were Horizon vs BOTW.

I find it quite amusing that ppl think a bigger world = an advantage over another game.

What a strange criticism.

Well, if you look at it that way, then i'd say pretty much all the "advantages" made for both games in the comparison list are superficial.

Did people think Zelda story was good?

Zelda BoTW had deep & meaningfull story? Story has to be a weakness in that game.

He lists GoW as haveing better Story + better gameplay (combat) than zelda BoTW.
Thats not a superficial advantage.... thats like the "core" of a game.

God of War having a better story isn't really a big deal because the games aren't trying to accomplish the same thing.

Would it be nice if Zelda didn't have a shit story? Sure. Is it technically an advantage that GoW has a better story? Yes. But when we look at these games and what they're actually trying to accomplish that's comparing apples and oranges.

Also saying it has better gameplay than BoTW is highly debatable

It all depends on which type of game you like better. I prefer cinematic games with some freedom over full open world games most of the time. So I would probably prefer GOW over BoTW. Others prefer BoTW over GOW, since they like that type of game more. I would say you could better compare GOW, with Uncharted 4 or Bloodborne, since they are way more similar. Even HZD would be a way better comparison for GOW than Zelda.

At the end of the road all of the games I named are pretty great, so it doesn't actually matter all that much.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar
