How much influence is SMT V going to take from Persona 5?

The game will be greatly ... 2 11.76%

The game will take certai... 5 29.41%

Atlus won't change the ma... 10 58.82%

Total:17

With Persona 5 being the biggest success Atlus has had in years by quite a margain, it's easy to assume it's going to have a ton of influence on the company's projects going forward. They are already in the process of hitting the iron while it's still hot, with dance spinoffs of P5 and P3, and Persona Q2 for the 3DS, and I'm willing to bet other projects as well. But how is it going to affect the main SMT line?

After all, Persona games are a bright and colourful spinoff of the usually more dark and gritty Shin Megami Tensei games. They, however, are not near as popular as their happy counterpart, so there's a chance SMT games will start getting more and more traits from Persona games, and in particular P5.

What do you think? Will SMT V be greatly influenced by Persona 5, or will Atlus keep the series' tone at the cost of alienating those new Persona fans?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I think, seeing as how it is a spin off, and thus a subsection of Persona, it will obviously take a lot of influence.

Well, Persona actually started as a spin-off of SMT, rather than the other way round. But regardless, to answer the OP, since they've shared a lot of enemies, spells and general battle system through their many entries, the two series are fairly knit together anyways.

The games however are not developed by the same studio and have a different atmosphere to them, and i think rather than hail Persona 5 as their untouched, sucessful masterpiece, they'll try to make an amazing game in their own right, which is the better approach in my opinion.

I know. I was joking at the expense of the fanbase.

But anyways I do not think persona will affect SMT ... then again I heard apocalypse was "more anime" or some shit... whatever that means.

None if any tbh the SMT games have always done their own things it's actually more been Persona influenced by SMT due to the latter being a spin off.

Well, nothing from the reveal trailer indicated a change in tone or anything ressembling a Persona game, which I'm glad.

Anyway, the combat system was already so good in SMTIVA than it would be a waste to not reutilize it again. And also, I hope they'll go more rampage with the difficulty of the next game again, that 1st dungeon in SMTIV still gives me a smile thinking about all the deaths I got there.

No, please, don't ask for more difficulty! I haven't beaten SMT IV's tutorial yet, much less the rest of the game!

The director has gone on record to say that he hopes to make V feel like Nocturne, if it can be even a quarter as good as that one, then we're good. Game play wise, IVA is already very good, so there's not really any need to change that, just hope the rest of the game is good as I was left rather disappointed with IV and Apocalypse when it came to things beside the gameplay.

Hoping it takes influence from the platform Persona is on. I want a PS4 release

SMTV on PS3!

I could see them adding psy and nuclear attacks/weakness but aside from that I doubt they'll take much of anything from persona 5
