This might sound ignorant but what's the difference between manga and anime? Is Manga a novel as opposed to animation?

Anime is animation while manga are comics. Manga is distinct from other types of comics in that they are often written & drawn by one person, are often black & white, and they often have actual endings rather than continue on forever under different creators.

pretty much this lol

Bloodborne dun fucked it up in the story department as far as I am concerned: I have not read the aforementioned novels, but I should not need to: Demon's Souls and Dark Souls presented an engaging story without any prior knowledge of anything, Bloodborne fails to do so for me.

I have finished the game, but doubt that I'll be returning to it upon - if, I ever read those works.

Except it's not about establishing a story, it's about understanding a genre.

Either way, the outcome for me is the same: I did not enjoy the gameplay as much as for example, Dark Souls for me to return to the game at some point.

Though I admit the ecstatic replies from some people here got me actually interested in the genre itself.

I highly recommend trying out Cosmic Horror. I'd start with the Shadow of Innsmouth. It's what Bloodborne's DLC, The Old Hunters, draws heavy inspiration from in the last section.
