But that's the point. The argument should be based entirely on the words of each side. Seeing how many people "like" one side of an argument over the other diminishes the worth of the content of the argument. Popularity does not equal truth. That is a very commonly used logical fallacy.

I don't really like the feature myself, but unfortunately the way arguments work on here it essentially is a battle of who can draw out the argument the longest, since if one person doesn't bother to continue it it appears as if they lost, despite the possibility that they're just fed up with having to deal with someone who consistently denies facts.

I think you overestimate the mindset of many of the users of this site. Time will tell I suppose. I hope you're right on this one.

LOL!!!

Well, I didn't mean to imply ALL users had common sense...   :P

...but I would hope that any line of thinking that started down the "look at all my likes" path, would be crushed so quickly that it wouldn't matter. But, as you said, let's give it some time and see how it goes.

This is an argument that I see repeatedly from people who tend to hold unreasonable opinions. I suppose those people are aware of what they post, therefore a like system would tip the scale against them. Once their own posts show little to no likes while counter-arguments have lots of likes, it would be hard to sway people on the fence with FUD. Without a like system, any longer argument would appear to be balanced between both sides, essentially giving the impression that both sides are equally valid; a like system, however, could do away with such a perception quickly because observers of the argument wouldn't be completely invisible anymore.

Case in point. Apparently people's whose posts don't have likes have unreasonable opinions vs those with more likes.

I don't use this feature.

I think it's nice. It gives the ability to voice agreement without having to post exactly the same thing as someone else, and it allows you to better see how much support (silent or vocal) there is for certain views. Also, as there's no external incentive to create posts just for likes, it shouldn't have any big drawbacks either.

No, the point is that someone like potato_hamster knows that he holds unreasonable opinions regardless of the existence or lack thereof of a like system. The existence of a like system would make that more apparent to people at large, so a like system poses a threat.

What you quoted was my response to the statement that a like system serves no other purpose than to distract from the content of conversations.

My opinions are perfectly reasonable. However, some of them are not very popular amongst large swaths of users on this site. It's pretty obvious that users such as Rol have already begun to construct a narrative that the like system is a means of invalidating the opinions of those they disagree with. This is precisely what I thought would happen as soon as I saw the like icons on posts. Rol has proven my point quite handily.

My thumb is down on this one.

Actually, another finger is up...

You're keeping a list of comments I've made that you you think are unreasonable that can pull out at a moments notice when you want to try and discredit me? Do you have a little text file stored on your computer or something? I bet you do!

What did you name it? Where is it located? Let me guess! My Documents / VGChartz / Enemies / Potato_hamster.txt

That would be funny if it weren't so sad and pathetic.

That's the classic comeback of someone who has been proven wrong. Nothing more than an attempt to discredit the person who brought forth the proof.

You shouldn't have made the claim that your opinions are perfectly reasonable, not with your posting history.

Discredit you? Why would I bother to do that? Silly Rol, you do a great job of that all on your own!

I've made over 2300 forum posts across hundreds of threads. Apparently you've found 7 of them across 2-3 threads to be "unreasonable" filed them away in your little text document, and this in your mind means I don't have any right to claim I've been "perfectly reasonable" on this site? Of course, it should go without saying - but since this is you we're talking about, these posts are only unreasonable in your opinion! Unfortunately for you, your opinion isn't actually an objective fact, despite your persistent attitude that it should be treated as such (like the notion that showing off your adorable little text file "proves me wrong"). I won't go into whether or not those posts hold reasonable views, because that would be incredibly off topic, and derailing to the tread.

So, let's just say that you've done a tremendous job of displaying exactly the kind of behavior that a like system invites.

I am not treating you any different than before, so you pinning the blame on the like system is neither fair nor justified.

Ahh Rol, there you go again with your poor reading comprehension. That isn't what I said at all!

Maybe you can refer to your little text file to help sort it all out.

Now, can you please stop trying to derail the thread ?
