Forums - Gaming Discussion - What happened to "SQAURE ENIX" after Ps2 era?

i remember the time where square enix was still called Squaresoft, before they teamed up with enix. in this time the pruduced one jrpg hit after other...remember games like crono trigger, secret of mana, final fantasy, vagrant story, xenogears, crono cross, dragon quest, threads of fate, parasite eve, radiata stories, valkyrie profile, grandia, kingdom hearts, star ocean...as jrpg lover it wasn't even necessary to wait for a review (it's my opinion), and you knew already you would buy a game what you will enjoy, because it's from SQAURE ENIX, but then with the the generation of ps3/xbox this changed...something has gone wrong, but why?

Ah? Bar trash like the XIII "saga", SE still makes a lot of great games - including my GOTY 2017, NieR Automata, for example.

Yeah, I guess after the Ps2 Era, they just couldn't replicate something as good as The Bouncer ever again.

With the coming of PS360, games became bigger and bigger, and thus they lost one of the biggest restrains they used to have. The appeal to the western market was also another reason to the change, alongside the supposedly fear they got for low-middle tier JRPGs until Bravely Default.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

IVE ever heard of that company, are they as good as “square Enix” :p

wan't say that they didn't make good games anymore, but i think the jrpg factory like it were 10 years ago has changed a lot...

I think SE has only really fallen when it comes to Final Fantasy which just happens to be their flagship franchise.

The TR games are good, Neir A is great, Dragon Quest has never let us down, Octopath looks like it will be fun, FFXIV online was redeemed with A Realm Reborn, etc etc etc.

The only thing they are really dropping the ball with is single player mainline Final Fantasy games (FFXV was OK, but still a ways to go for comllete redemption) and the fact that we have not had a continuation of Chrono Trigger/Cross.

that games became bigger is naturally a reason too, ffxv, kingdom hearts 3, final fantasy vii remake are a good example...but fir this reason stuff increased too, if i remember correctly on ff vi worked 15 - 20 people but nowadays they have teams with 100 - 200 people ( if is a aaa project)

I think it's something of a faulty perception that Square Enix has fallen after the PS2 era. Mostly it's because Final Fantasy as a series hasn't been able to produce the kind of single player games fans are expecting. Because it is S-E's flagship series, it reflects on the perception of the entire company, even though they've still been putting out great games outside of the series as well. After all, in just the last few years we've gotten games like Nier: Automata, Bravely Default and its sequel, and many others.

Yoichi Wada happened (He's no longer CEO though since 2015 thank the gaming gods, and it's obvious that SE was getting their shit together around this time and making much better decisions). Also, Sakaguchi's movie almost put Square under back in 2002-2003 so they needed some help, thus the merger.
