I... don't get why they close some studios and then open new ones.

They have run down Psygnosis/studio liverpool and yet here they are opening new studios. I like tat theres new studios but i don't get how not to try and salvage what you got rather than open a new one.

They can be unhappy about the work of a studio, its orientation, or the relations they have with them, but still want to make games. You can close a branch you're unhappy with and open a new one elsewhere, no contradiction in that.

Sweet. I loved my tour of SOE as a teen and was sad to see them leave the fold. Gonna be cool to have another game studio in SD.

I live in SD and will definitely be keeping an eye on them, though my work/life balance is important to me and I'm not sure if the hours in game development are for me.

Nice, you can at least try to keep us up with details that you hear!

It's harder to attract new and better talent with stagnating studios like Liverpool ...

Salvage how ? Just how many game developers and their families are willing relocate to another studio ? Sony has to draw the line otherwise they'll end up with investing in duds like how Microsoft bought Rare today who has no worthwhile talent ... (same with Lionhead)

Sony should see their game studios as investments so having a lenient relationship with them breaks the chain of command and respect that they have for Sony. I don't blame them for closing down studios when all Sony wants and ideally all businesses want are results so a boss has to make hard decisions like firing bad employees or in the extreme case for Sony, that would be closing down mediocre studios ...

I think because studios become known for their successes and failures. I think that's true for the consumer's pov and potential employees' pov. There's gamers  who won't buy a game from a certain studio or a studio has trouble finding new employees. If it gets bad enough, it might be better to just build a new one from scratch with no rep.

Hopefully they are making a title for the ps5 launch in 2 to 3 years

This is exactly what i want, more studios for more exclusives.

Sony is killing it... and their still getting more? damn.
Is there any announcements about MS getting more studios for xbox games? I feel like that would be more important news.

Sony is smart. They will always keep investing on new studios, they know how it paid off with PS3, for example.

Microsoft of the other hand... as long as they have modest first party support, they will never win a generation.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

I think this new studio is part of Sony's plan to prepare for the PS5. I still think Fall 2020 is the best time unless a competitor makes a surprise move. Fall 2020 would be enough time for a sequel to Horizon: Zero Dawn to not be rushed as a PS5 exclusive launch title.

Do it. Sony's first party output is only improving gen-on-gen.

I heard that the next Horizon has only just begun being created a month or so ago. I don't have faith it could make any launch window.
