I did say it would land in the 94-96 range
Even though I wasn't sold on the game till recently. I will pick this up!

Well, ask yourself - what does 5/10 signify? In school, a 50 out of 100 means you only put forth half the effort, and thus, failed the assignment. When everyone else is rating something 8-10, 3 (or 30) points less becomes suspect. |
Well, everyone does ratings differently. Here are some ways of doing ratings. 10/10 for example:
Better than 100% of the other games
Recommended to 100% of people
Enjoyed playing it 100% of the time
100% in quality, as in no flaws
Those are just 4 examples I can think of as to what 10/10 could mean, so that has to be taken into account.

This exactly. I can maybe accept down to say 6/10 as genuine and not trolling, but when everyone is giving it such high marks anything signifying a failing grade is definitely suspicious as you said.

Even if you remove the 10s, I stand by it. When everyone else scores you high, getting something that low becomes suspect. |
Well, the quality of a game is completely subjective, I love FFX for example but I know there are others that absolutely hate it.
Those are great scores for a game I'm hyped to play... hoping I don't get let down due to expectations.

Is a 5/10 automatically going to be considered a troll review? |
yes.
if it has 80 reviews all basically 9's and 10's... a 5 would be a troll review.

A troll review because it's a 5/10, or that it is inconceivable that someone would give it a 5?

Yes, if your the only one to score it so (or one of very few).... yes.
Esp if theres a huuuuuge pool of others reviewing it that dont give it anywhere near that.
Yes a 5 outta 10, imo would be a auto-troll-review.

I don't think the quality of a truly well made game is subjective. It's pretty easy to discern if you understand the medium. Now personal taste is another matter. Maybe some just don't like action games or they don't like Norse mythology or something so this wouldn't be as appealing. But a critic trashing it just because it's not necessarily their favorite genre, while ignoring how well made it seems to be in each individual metric would be a troll review, imo. After all, the point of someone whose job is a game critic isn't to say "well, I don't personally like open world games, so therefore this is a 1/10." Their personal preference obviously should play a factor in their review, but so should the objective, unbiased quality of the game. After all, they get paid to write these reviews for others to see and to help give others a sense of if the game is right for them.
