Forums - Sony Discussion - Why was the ps vita not called PSP2?

I think it has to do with the Numbering i remember when microsoft was asked why they choose Xbox 360 over calling it xbox 2.. their response was, it is the general consumer who are not into gaming and want to purchase a console for their kid.. so on the shelf they see a playstation 3 and xbox 2 , so they automatically assume that higher number is better. Honestly this reason make sense, So I think it was same with vita as it came along side 3DS which was bascially DS2, so i guess they had the same fear as MS, but at the end of the day it back fired in a big way.

That is an interesting theory. But then we see the next Xbox as Xbox One....... I do get how they got the "ONE" from.

Because everyone went through this phase of giving consoles stupid as fuck names. The same reason we have the Xbox one and Wii u instead of the Xbox tri and the super Wii

maybe pswitch would have done better😉

lol yes! that was one of the question asked to don at xbox launch.. about the philosophy behind the name xbox one name, in regards to 360. he said we were not market leaders back then now we are so we want consumer to start see this as a new beginning for xbox brand.

One of the biggest mistakes Sony did with PS Vita.

The PSP was considered a half failure. They wanted to distance themselves from the console (the PSP) and so opted for a new name.

80M+ sold for the first ever Sony made handheld is considered a half failure? Bro, that's nonsense.

Same reason Wii U wasn't called Wii 2... stupidity ;)

In hindsight, we can see that the marketing department screwed up by bringing in the new name. But, at the time, I'm sure they were thinking that they want people to consider it more than just another gaming system. PSP2 would have clearly just been another gaming device. Now that we see poor sales of Vita, that's clearly idiotic. But, they didn't know it was gonna sell like crap at the time.
