Forums - Gaming Discussion - Anyone playing Ni no Kuni 2? (Thoughts on the game)

I need the impressions of someone who has played this game. I find it odd everyone is so silent about it.

There was a thread but it was pretty quiet.
My wife and I really enjoy playing it, have done about 70 hours. I play through RPGs pretty slow so you can definitely get through it a lot quicker. Kingdom building is an awesome part of the game in my opinion, battle system is pretty cool, story is okay, not too difficult skill wise. My only real issue with the game is that there is a lot of voice acting missing, it cuts between voiced and reading in a weird way, parts seem like they should be voiced but they are not.

I bought it. Collector's edition too! But still haven't played it.

Yeah, this was annoying at first, but I got used to it, I've played games that have this before, anyways, my thoughts on this is that it made me feel anxious at first for the Kingdom Building segment, only thing that got me past the somewhat boring intro of a mutiny or something like that happening at first, but after I got to that part, I was actually quite disappointed, I thought I could actually explore the Kingdom personally or in third person, but alas, you can't, it's just the same as walking on the world map, they could have made much more of it, Dark Cloud 2 has better building system, actually, even Dark Cloud 1 did too, the combat system though is it's saving grace for me, yeah it's your typical action JRPG combat system but it's something and quite fun, I got my kingdom to level 2 but it's gonna take a while to build lots of its structures, and it feels somewhat of a grind as you need to find quite a number of the citizens to put in or build them, this actually reminds me of Suikoden 2 in someway, anyways, feels like an average JRPG but it's really fun for the most part, clocked in around 20+ hours, not playing it right now though, having a blast with Far Cry 5 atm.

Nintendo Switch FC: SW-6340-7643-4233 aka Renji

Steam: Lee Roid

I have finished it and slowly going for plat.

+Charming characters, world, visuals and music
+Kingdom building is enjoyable and interconnects with the rest of the game well

-story is ok (the ending left me baffled)
-story is easy BUT extras are tough and require mass grinding
-combat is lacklustre despite having some depth

I enjoyed it but I think the first one is better.

Currently playing I’m on chapter 6 had it since launch butnitntakes me a long time to complete games due to work and being a parent. I’m really enjoying it, the visual are nice and colourful and the locations are awesome places to explore aswell.
The characters all seem well developed and charmful (although Evan sometimes annoys me (he’s a little bit too goody goody)
The combat is ok if a little simple and easy but I still enjoy it.

I’m enjoying building my kingdom the most though I think, it’s good to see it grow and see it expand.

One bad thing about the game I can say is there’s such a lack of voiceovers, even on main story parts there is no voice overs only on select parts, it’s strange because there isn’t that much text too read so I can’t understand why they didn’t use voiceovers as it wouldn’t take much time to do it and it’d make it more immersive and bring the characters more to life.

I’d been playing it but have since jumped to TERA and Shadow Of War. Ni No Kuni is fun but not captivating. I’m a huge Dark Cloud fan and thought I’d be getting my Dark Cloud fix from this but not so. I think the reason why I can’t really be drawn in is because of the back and forth between reading and voice work. Would be nice if they’d just picked one and gone that way specifically.

The combat system is fun and the characters are great but I feel like they’re not a saving grace for this game. Roland and Evan are good but they just aren’t Max and Monica. I’d not played the first game but thought this one looked really good. And while it’s indeed a fun game I don’t feel like it’s a must play.

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

The consensus here is that the combat system is good which i'm surprised about since it looked kinda off in the gameplay videos.

I personally think it's not as good as the first. The story to me is just kinda bland. It starts out interesting enough but then spirals downhill. Within 20 hours in the game I began to feel story/plot fatigue. Go here, fix problems, skirmish, town building, and it cycles around this nearly the entire game.

The game is gorgeous, best JRPG I've ever laid eyes on, combat is so...damn...easy. In the beginning I felt it had a nice pacing but by the 8th hour in or so, you just kill everything. Bosses and infected monsters are so easy, dream doors are easy, etc.

For a game that has voice acting I've got to say, for 2018 it's mediocre and there's not enough of it. It cuts in and out at the most random of times. And when there is voice acting it's only for say...10 to 20 seconds or so. Reminds me of the PS1 era tbh.

The quest system is fair enough, some quests were enjoyable, most are just go here and get this. They tried to make the quest system more viable by incorporating mandatory side quests to progress the main plot and it turned out okay I guess, at times I was frustrated because I had to find someone numerous times just to join the kingdom and progress. And often times they get so wordy and they're not talking about anything I haven't heard of before, that just gets old, Golden Sun comes to mind with a lot of the dialogue. Not as bad as Golden Sun though.

Music...eh, Joe Hisaishi did a much better job in the first game, and II heavily relies on the first game's soundtrack, There are some gems like Gold Paw, and Hydropolis, but they're few and far between. Overall, my experience was just...meh. I had high expectations after the first game but I was kind of let down. Even though the battle system is nice and flashy, and Tales of -esque, it didn't retain the amount of strategy you needed in the original and I was afraid of that when I heard they were changing the battle system, my concerns were justified it seems. Most of the time you just hit A or the action button over and over until the next enemy is dead and when the golden thingy appears you're basically God at that point, just spam the spells.

Not a bad game by any means, I'd rate it a 75/100, You can tell that Ghibli wasn't as involved in this game as the first. It seems like a shell of what the original was. I understand the original had world tropes as well, but when the series keeps doing it, it becomes old. The Plains, The Water Place, The Desert Place, The Snow Place, The Beach Place, The Poison Place, The Technology Place, it just gets old you know. Definitely not something I will thoroughly remember for years to come. I guess coming off Xenoblade Chronicles 2, my expectations were a bit high.
