Forums - Politics Discussion - Can the Rape Culture in the West be Reduced with Guns?

Well a better point to start from would be to ask if rape culture in the West actually exists.

i think these reports if accurate would constitute clear signs of a rape culture

Wouldn't the thread yesterday show that there isn't a rape culture? Since most of the people participating in the thread went against said user?

Well, the question I guess is whether it has to be the dominant belief to be considered part of the culture, but here are some articles discussing the matter:

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/investigations/unfounded-sexual-assault-canada-main/article33891309/

https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/features/how-police-still-fail-rape-victims-w434669

I will read these later, but I never said I did believe in a rape culture or didn't believe in one, I think that is just the appropriate place to start the discussion. So thanks for providing me with reading material, although for obvious reasons I'm not going to take your other source seriously (most people would do MANY things they can't do if they didn't face consequences, that's just human nature).

I suppose there are ways that Indian women could benefit from owning a gun, but I'd rather start from the basic and work our way there.

Well, judging by this definition:

"A society or environment whose prevailing social attitudes have the effect of normalizing or trivializing sexual assault and abuse."

And considering the thread from yesterday, I'd say that yes it does.

such culture doesn't exist here in the west, India needs to modernize their laws & morals more, and I don't think easier access to guns would help much in developing/3rd world country like India without doing the former first.

You are way generalizing things. The examples you give are mostly from a country that has a population way too big for its own good, with a kind of religion, or culture, that is kind of backwards and thus leads to many unfortunate situations. So in those cases, its actually a cultural problem, not a rape culture.

Outside of that, there is no such thing as rape culture.

Adding guns won't address the source of the problem. You have to investigate whether the rape culture is the result of certain factors, whether they be the negligence of the judicial system, a gang engaging in sex trafficking, or a culture that does not discourage raping.

"such culture doesn't exist here in the west"

the first 3 links i posted in the op indicate that a rape culture does indeed exist in the west

The problem is though that most people are sexually abused by those that they know, so most of the time it's not the case of a stranger coming by and trying to force themselves on you and you being able to fend them off with a gun. It's more complicated than that.
