New hardware meaning new possibilities and potentially better looking games, more stable frame rates and well, just the good old fashioned fun to get new upgraded hardware cause why not

Mainline pokemon games.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Necessity.

I don't have an XOne or a PS4 because I don't need it, and the titles on the systems don't interest me.
I do have a Switch because: I have a soft spot for handhelds, and it is the only machine (for now) that can play Nintendo's first party titles.

Exclusives and a decent library overall. Super Smash Bros. and Persona is all you need to make me buy a Nintendo system and a PlayStation respectively.

Even an Xbox One bundle that’s more than half off wouldn’t interest me cause I simply don’t care for its game selection.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Simple - games.

A combination of games, and hardware revision. If the launch version of a console doesn't have any games, and has poorly thought out, overpriced, hardware I'll skip it. Sony systems for example have always been worth waiting a year or two for instead of getting out of the gate.

I got a Switch early, because the price was decent, it had plenty of games, and the hardware (portable-console hybrid) was a genius idea.

I think these three things are ultimately what motivates most people to get a new system. I mean look at the XB1. It lacks exclusives, was $100 more expensive, and came with Kinect (poorly thought out hardware).

Or look at the PS Vita, and 3DS. Both systems were expensive at launch, both systems lacked games, and both had a fair share of hardware design hiccups. Luckily Nintendo righted the 3DS, with the XL model, a nice price cut, and good games.

If 3DS had launched with a $200 2DS XL model, Mario Kart, and 3D Land it would have been in a much better boat from the outset, sales wise.

Well you get those in the current generation so how is that a specific motivator for a new gen system?
