If Doom was on last gen it almost certainly wouldn't have retained the core rendering tech of the PS4/Xbone versions as the Switch does, it would've stripped out current gen techniques such as PBR, much like the PS3/360 versions of Advanced Warfare.

Totally agree, after watching the two videos in the parts that were the same scene, I really couldn't see much of a difference visually asides from more vivid colours on the XBoxX version, not sure if that is HDR........not saying there wouldn't be in full glory 4k TV but on my 14 inch laptop screen, I really couldn't tell one from the other. There looked to be a very obvious difference when the Doom slayer was inside with the outside on the Switch looking kind of washed out but when the doom slayer went outside with the rocks and outside scenery, I couldn't really see a difference.

While youtube compression does hide a lot, I still think there's a noticeable difference even when watching them as embedded videos on my laptop, I just don't quite think it's a generational difference as the core visual makeup is similar, just at very different levels of quality.

Yeah, agreed. I too am very interested to see how far the Switch gets pushed over the next few years, and what its most graphically accomplished games end up looking like by the time all's said and done.

I actually want to see how far they can take the id tech engine on Switch, it's still early days remember... And successive patches have increased performance.

In person there is a massive difference in visual fidelity.
Now on only a 720P, 6.2" screen... The shortcomings will not be as noticeable, but they are still there.

The biggest issue is the 30fps cap though, which is a detriment to gameplay in my opinion.
It's still a good achievement with what they have pulled off though.

You won't see HDR colors in a non-HDR monitor, it's also quite possible that it would look worse instead of more vivid.

Yeah, from what we've seen so far it would appear Wolfenstein II already looks better on Switch than Doom, which makes sense as the devs have more experience with the hardware now and presumably tools are improving too.

Id tech 6 does seem a very capable engine; I'm also interested to see how far the likes of Unreal 4 can be taken on Switch. (Funnily enough one of the most visually impressive Switch games so far for me is Outlast II, which runs on the ancient Unreal 3)

Snowdrop also produced some nice results in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

I'm just here to see how on earth this thread has received 270+ posts thus far... I still don't get it lol

Still looks like the same gen to me, kinda like Dreamcast vs original Xbox.

Since games on the X have to be able to run on the base Xbone, the core technical makeup is more or less the same, just with a boost to resolution and sometimes other graphical settings, and since the Switch version retains most of the core tech of the Xbone/PS4 version, the overall look is similar, just at much lower settings.

Oh, come now. More like PS Vita vs PS4.

This is a massive exaggeration, but im sure you were well aware of that.

Nah, Vita and PS4 games use massively different core rendering techniques, whereas the Switch and Scorpio versions of Doom use basically the same core techniques, just at different levels of quality.
