Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is it okay to Pirate games?

I'd say pirating a game is ok if that particular game is no longer available as an official release from the publisher.

Only game I pirated was Sims 4 because I wanted to try it. After getting into it a bit I thought about putting money into it then I saw how scammy EA is. Those expansions are effing expensive for content that should already be in the damn game. I have no regrets pirating that shit but that was years ago. Sims is an expensive hobby I'll never go into again.

Overall I don't pirate since I'm not a PC gamer but roms were everything to me.

There was and is a trial version of The Sims 4 on Origin, where you can try out the full main game for 48 hours... so why pirate it?

And EA never made a secret about expansion packs... they were there since The Sims 1.

Also please spare use the stereotypes from sentences like "I don't pirate since I'm not a PC gamer" which only poison the discussion.

It is never okay to pirate.

Purchase the damn game.

No, it's stealing.

If its never released in english (jp only)... but theres a fan translation out there.
I think yeah its "okay" morally.

Its a game that you potentially never would have played, that you now can.
Their "loss" is nothing, because it was never something you would have bought.

Also if you own a disk of a game, but its scratched to hell.... I think its okay to pirate that game also.
Its probably not by the law, but morally again I think that fine.

Contrary to what some people think, piracy can do some good. I know it because it happened to me.

I came from a low-middle class family, the only way I could really play game was thanks to piracy; I saved a ton of money to buy the console and 90% of my games were pirated (some were original).

But thanks to that I played so many great games that I otherwise would to have not played, and now that I'm an adult with a good income, I can buy them no problem.

Just to give a few examples:
1- Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, played pirated on the Wii; bought Awakening and Fates on the 3DS
2- Bioshock 1 and 2, pirated on PC; bought Infinite on PC when it came out
3- Monster Hunter Tri, pirated on the Wii; bought Monster Hunter 4 on the 3DS and recently World on PS4
4- 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors, emulated on DS; bought Virtue's Last Reward and Zero Time Dilemma on 3DS
5- Mass Effect 1 and 2, pirated on PC; bought Mass Effect 3 on PC

These are honestly just a few and the ones that immediately come to mind.

So to answer the OP question, yes I do think is okay to pirate games; maybe not everyone is like me and they continue to pirate, but I firmly believe piracy can work with some people.

There was a study in europe... cant remember by who, but it concluded that piracy was overall good for game sales
(not what the guys that paid for the study wanted it to show I guess).

No, its not, despite a lot of people having a lot of excuses for it.
I pirated a lot of games on ps1 era and later while I was a pc gamer. Also downloaded a lot of mp3 in my life including recently the Destiny 2 soundtrack. But that does not mean this is right, I dont come with excuses for it.

But do you now also buy more games than the avg person?
Would you be like this if you hadnt enjoyed games in your youth (that you had to pirate)?

Yes, if it's not done in excess and without reason.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Pirating new games is obviously the worst.

Does anybody really care about old games being pirated that the publisher isnt selling? If a game is no longer being sold by the publisher or is being exploited like virtual console, I feel that form of piracy isnt a big deal.

Thats another thing.
you wanted to play some old SNES game or N64 game, but you couldnt get them on the pc/ps4/3ds/switch.... and no publisher is selling it.

If thats the case the piracy of that game, isnt costing anyone anything.
Those times I think its perfectly "fine" morally to do so as well.

You could just buy the JP version of the game and then apply the fan translation. There's no need to pirate it.

Applying those patches can be tricky...

Didn't know about trial version. Was too intrigued by the game so I went straight to it.

I see now it's not a secret but still scummy imo.

I mean, I used that sentence because I don't play pc games and I don't see how you can pirate ps4 games which I mainly play.
