This some kind of pretend narrative I haven't heard about?  Tons of gamers have been saying for years that GTA 4 is overrated, along with many other games.

I liked it! Played through that pecker twice. Once at launch, and again when it got a trophy patch.

Because Rockstar. The same reason Overwatch is overrated is because Blizzard.

Some companies just get a pass on being uninteresting.

Imo every GTA suffers from being a jack of all trades master of none. And the mechanics always improve with subsequent playthrough making the older games terribly dated, while the new ones seems like amazing games, at least while the hype lasts... GTAIV also had the problem of having a campaign that didn’t please a lot of people

Did it deserve a 98? hell no. But it also doesn't deserve the amount of negativity directed towards it either imo.

It's overrated by critics, and underrated by users.

So many games in the 7th gen were overrated, this is around the time when I really stopped caring about reviews, what with all the inflated scores flying around freely everywhere.

Cause it was a new GTA. People sucked up to it for that reason, and that reason alone. However, to doubt some reviews weren’t bought would be naive. The game isn’t bad. It’s okay. I prefer it over the original GTA’s which were ugly top-down messes. It’s much inferior to San Andreas in every way though
