There is that theory [see: coincidence] that the most popular team loses because the "better" players are on the other team. Hasn't been as much of a thing in Splatoon 2 as 1, since they redid how scoring works. But, winning both Solo and Team and losing Popularity has happened. Then again, so has a total knock-out.

What is this soccer you speak of new worlders? Back in mainland Eurasia-Africa, We don;t know what soccer i. Our sports include football, rugby, tennis, cricket, hickey among others. The most popular us football and the others are very popular as well depending on region

It probably was coincidence but in Splat1 I always tried to pick the side I thought would be least popular because it seemed to work out that way so often.

I can't remember which splatfest it was where I was on the most popular side yet still ended up with several matches where we played against our own team despite having the majority.

Soccer is boring. All you do is hit the ball around and hope no one takes your ball. I will take baseball any day.
